1998 R with 40,000 miles & sat nav or 1999 T with 54,000 miles both exactly the same price, what would you buy?

Buy either of these on condition-which feels fresh (eg leather, paint etc). The T will have clear indicators and a different radio (different to if the R reg didnt have sat nav). Also- I have heard of the sat nav units failing so beware- you wouldnt want to have to fix that!

Real tough one i think

If you were gonna keep the miles low, then i would go for the newer one, other than that the only other things i would go on would be condition ie, stonechips and interior wear.

Also, colour can have big effect on residuals especially on Porsches, mainstream colours sell better than special order ones usually.

1999 T would be the one I would go for, mainly because it's when the minor facelift came in, so you have a 'newer' model....

let me guess price.... £35k?

I agree with the other guys it's probably down to condition, but if they are the same the 99 car sounds more tempting to me , gained clear lenses, POSIP's side impact protection & slightly better exhaust sound & a few other tweaks as standard !
But how do the specs compare, when were they last serviced, are they both C16 UK spec cars?

The standard wisdom is to go for the younger car , however I understand that the 98 R has less chance of RMS failure than the 99 T . Having said that my Nov 97 R , originally owned by Porsche UK and now with 68k miles is performing fine as is its satnav on a 2000/1 map CD .

As a general rule of thumb of buying any car firstly try and buy the newest and lowest mileage car with the very important full service history, then comes condition, spec, colour.

If this was my choice, I would drive both and then get them both inspected.

No contest....newer car will be kinder to you when you sell on, unless your keeping it forever then it wouldnt matter any which way

I have owned a 98 996. - great car but come 99 they fitted a differenct bosch engine management part (can be distinguised by looking at the airbox in the engine, resolved the issues with clicking clutches which earlier cars can suffer from plus one or two other things which I have been told which I can no longer remember. I would buy the 99. Mileage is only vanity.
