Hello fellow P'headers and thank you all for being such a fantastic and often funny source of info and entertainment for the past few years. Yes I have been a 'lurker' and studied loads of great info on here about the cars we love and enjoy.

Last week I realised a dream and privately purchased a beautiful midnight blue metalic 1995 993 manual coupe with 100k miles and FSH. Photos to follow!

The car covered the 450 miles journey home perfectly and I cannot tell you how happy I was.....UNTIL the next day when I experienced problems starting it! My happiness has traded places with anxiety and mild panic!

When I turned the key the car completely ' died ' and I thought, '' OH ***T!!''
I tried again and this time it nearly started but I got a ' locking up / siezing type sound from the back of the car. It eventually started and it has a misfire.

Long story shortened - it got towed to my indy where the starter motor along with dizzy caps / rotor arms and fan belt got changed and injectors were cleaned.

Got the car back on Friday and it started. Next day the exact same symptoms re appear and its very reluctant to start however once its warm it starts easily - leave it off for 20 mins and it doesn't want to start. Still misfiring plus when I parked it the oil pressure warning light flashed 3 times!! The dipstick is showing an overfill of oil by about half an inch.

The car is going back to the indys tomorrow however have any of you good people experienced anything similar with your 993s?

Thank you kindly.

Hi
Have you called the person you purchased it from before posting on here?

I would hope so. Even though it was a private sale they are much more likely to know the fault that an interent forum that do not know the car. From what you say you are either very unlucky or more likely the issue was there when you purchased it.

Without you knowing the car was probably warm when you purchased it, hence running fine.

I hope you manage to get it sorted; cheaply.

Cheers

Thanks for the response!

No I have put off contacting the seller however I am getting more worried now and I'm thinking of contacting the chap to see if he can shed any light on this. Yes the car was indeed warm when I met him although it was turned off for an hour or so as we chatted an it started fine at the time. He had a friend put oil in it and I'm wondering if an oil overfill could contribute to this.

Yes photos to follow!

Oil overfill won't cause your problem. Remember you can only check the oil when the engine is fully up to temperature. i.e. when oil lines and front oil cooler is hot. Listen to what Pope said above he really knows his stuff

Yes the oil was checked correctly and also the battery was fine ( although it eventually lost some power when trying to start it. It's fully charged now )

Thank you Pope I'll look into that one.

I just wana drive this thing!

No its not that one..

The day I collected the car I travelled 500 miles by train ( should've been 450 miles - don't ask! ) then travelled 50 miles back again..then drove the thing 450 miles home!! I left the house at 7am and returned at 4am next day.

Quite a trek but I really wanted this car. Hope I made the right decision.

N802 BNU was my old one. It had an untraceable fault in the PA100 alarm/immobiliser that caused a milder version of what you described. A new battery always helped.

Fix it and enjoy it - they are awesome cars!

A quick and cheap check is to replace the DME relay - its a common 'doesn't start' problem area - especially when the car is otherwise running just fine.

Pope is top dog on 993's.
Do what he says.
Id check the distributor drive belt and timing personally.
And Id give the clowns your using a wide berth, and find someone whoknows what they're doing, avfter I ask them what they charged for.
As I read it, they changed a load of parts whacked on their cut, and its still playing up.

993's.
Ohh theyre good.

Oh right that's interesting. I've read about alarm / immob issues.

I mentioned the DME relay to the indy who said he didn't think so however since the problem persists I think I'll mention it again.

I've been a Porsche fan since boyhood and buying a 993 in many ways has been fantastic. I love these cars - I just want to get it sorted so that I can relax and get on with enjoying the thing to the full.

My mechanical ability extends to putting petrol in cars - but managed the DME change - simple DIY job - remove fuse cover - pull out old and push in a new one - they were about £12 last time I bought one from an OPC.
