Shame the journo didn't drive a gt car or turbo. Carreras might be borderline I guess.

The Boxster is rather good, and good value too. Great entry level car to seduce you into far more expensive offerings later.

New boxter looks great, and my 2.5 was my first Porsche and will always have fond memories but the same could be said of a good estate car for 40k or an RS6 for 75k, you buy because you can....especially with the new businessmans express.
The new 911 is aimed at wealthy people only, if you saved to buy one you would be absolutely nuts...

Love the new boxter its an awesome roadster and the cars that its aimed at cannot hold a torch to it. That said it will always be 911 for me whatever journo's claim or that daft bugger from Doncaster.

Think the new Boxster is stunning and a fantastic car, having just sat in one as a package it is more practical than 991, as comfortable as a 911, just as fast as 991,, but I don't aspire to own it. I have been out in a 991 and much preferred it to my 997.2, so I will, keep saving .....

Read TG's big group test this month. The 991 came 2nd equal with the Exige V6. The boxster didnt even make it to the final shakeup.

They were made from crap component's at nearly 50k, so god alone knows how they've managed to cheapen it even further. Bet most of the bolt's on's are from China now. Ladys' and Gentlemen i give you...the xster!

What a load of b lox, Who really cares what some bozo from the Sunday times thinks! It not even about cash, 981 money gets you a great 997, 996 money gets you a great 987....991 get you, a great anything.
All awesome and appeal for different reason, choice is a great thing!

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend taking advice from either the Sunday times or especially TG mag when it comes to buying cars, especially driver's car. Given the the Boxster and 911 have always been variations of a single model, the 911 is always going to look like poor value by comparison. But the 911 still has its own particular character - even the 991 (just!). Similarly, the Boxster always seems like great value as you're getting the same platform and engine and most of the same components, largely the same cabin etc as the 911, but for a massive discount. There's also something to be said for the purity and simplicity of a basic entry level Boxster, while the 991 moves upmarket and becomes more of a luxurious GT with each generation. Personally I prefer tin tops and am not much interested in the rear seats, so the Cayman would actually be my pick. A basic 987 Cayman 2.9 please. No extras. Putting the GT3 models to one side, that would be my pick of recent Porsche's, money no object.

I think this is a little harsh! It was a 1" wide by 3" high snippet in how great the Boxter was, rather than how poor the 911 is. And also a little misleading as it suggested that the Boxster was half the price of a 911, when all the guys on here have spec'd their Boxtsers up to about £60k!
All that being said, I think the Boxster looks better than the 911 convertible, so it's what I'd buy anyway.

"To build and bring to market a 997 Turbo, it costs Porsche less than $10,000 more per car than it does to build and bring to market a Boxster." http://www.racer.com/porsche-911-turbo-paddling-ah...I can see how this *might* be plausible for a NA 911 and Boxster. Sit inside a Boxster and it's much the same as a 911 - different bodyshape of course but otherwise not much between them in cost to build. But a turbo? Could they really get turbos, intercooler, other associated gubbins for that "low" a delta?
