Over the years I have noticed that OEM windscreen prices for the 996 and in particular, the 993 have been increasing at quite an accelerated rate.

The OPC parts guy I spoke to says that this is because the 993 is categorised as a classic car and so is the 996 (or soon will be). The pricing structure will be revised and implemented fully by January 2013. He also said that this is for parts in general, and not just glass.

This is sometimes difficult to justify (to a repeat/trade customer) especially since there is also a 'categorised classification' difference which basically means that a windscreen price for say a 996 Carrera will be different to that of a Turbo (assuming they both are the same spec screens).

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Its more about low volumes of production than anything else.

I'm only guessing, but the 993's still around don't cover many miles, and get through parts (including windscreens) fairly slowly.
So stocking parts (slow moving) gets expensive, as does short production runs

The 996's still around will fall into the same boat as time goes on.

I know that my business only stock parts for our current range, and old/obsolete spare parts cost more and are on longer lead times.

It's a little worrying that consumables like windscreens could be very expensive. What would the fitted cost for a Mk1 GT3 be?

Err, are you sure about that? £500 for a clutch and £300 for a waterpump spring to mind.

Well, thankfully enough 924s lying around in scrapyards to make "most" parts easy to source. I just got a wing for £40, door for £50....

Used 944 parts are cheap. They are also as old, and as knackered in most cases, as your broken parts. Waste of the labour charge in most cases. Body panels are fine if they are in good condition, as so many cars are being broken up, but what would be the point in fitting a used water pump or clutch unless it was known to be as-new? There are many options with cheaper suppliers, and alternative part numbers, if you do the research but often the OEM parts are more economical.

As I understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong, Porsche have this weird system where they stock parts at a set price until they run out? I've seen many 944 parts be priced stupidly low for years, and far cheaper that second-hand equivalents. Suddenly the stock runs out, the parts are then made in a much smaller batch, and that 1989 price becomes a 2012 (low-volume) price overnight.

I've not heard of them re-pricing existing parts because the cars are now "classics". Just that they were mass-produced cars when new, whether 944 or 996, but over time they sell less numbers of spares and the cost rises.

Here in the USA, 996 windshield is about $750, a 993 is approximately $1200 and a late 944 around $700.
All prices are retail, are plus any trim pieces and sales tax and are for "factory" (Pilkinton) screens.
The difficulty recently was getting factory quality screens, there are aftermarket..but no thanks!
We had to get a 996 screen from California not that long ago.

I have noticed that both availability and prices of parts has changed, I don't think it has anything to do with "classic" parts, it's the manufacturer changing production and stocking quantity of parts.
It's rare that I have to order a part that comes out of Germany, so the importer is obviously working on parts stocking.

Some OPC parts do seem to becoming much more expensive, I priced a front M030 wheel hub for a 968 last year at about £400, this year up to £750 !!
On the other hand I recently needed a cooling duct for the oil cooler, looking at it I guessed about £50, actual cost £7.95 delivered from Germany, ridiculously cheap I thought.
Paul's explanation sounds quite plausable I would say.
