I'm visiting the UK in October and was delighted to see Avis have the 991 Carrera S PDK on their Prestige fleet. So I've booked one for a week to explore either Wales or Scotland depending on the mood I'm in. I'll be sure to post impressions of car - and roads - here.

Nice one, you'll absolutely love it!
Can I be cheeky and ask how much it cost to rent for a week?

1950 for a week, mileage allowance 100 per day.
981S is 1500.

The rental costs are cheap compared with what a week of depreciation would be costing you so don't worry about the mileage just enjoy.

I guess in absolute terms, £2k is not a fortune and if you get a weeks pleasure out of it, then who am I to say it's bad value. (Especially since I routinely pay and extra £4k for business class upgrades when going on holiday.)
But really £2k is a right rip off. The TCO for a 991S is probably around £1300/month = £300/week. Less when you consider they can claim the VAT back.
Even allowing for poor residuals associated with renting the car out for a year or two, I can't see how they can justify £2k. That must be at least a 4x markup, if not more.

People will pay it, good for them! Sure, they are a business so fair enough. But they would have to justify it to ME if they wanted to rent me one, and they would fail miserably at that price.

And me, but to be honest we have clients who spend £2k on a dinner, and so spending the same to have a snotter to drive round in for a week when they're in town is nothing!

Don't forget utilisation...they'll be lucky to get the car out 50% of the time that they have it.

[quote=mhh]I collected the car in London on Saturday, drove the length of Wales and now I'm in Scotland - Portree, actually. Anyone know how to wind back the odometer on a 991? What a car! And what weather! what was the excess mileage charge?

The way I'm using it, the £2k for the week is the least of my worries. The excess mileage charge is £2 per mile. . I'm saving money by staying at cheap B&B's. . But seriously I'm having the adventure of a lifetime. I've come all the way from Australia to do it so a diesel Golf wasn't going to cut it. I'm an old guy with more money than time, so why not? I just did jackal's day 2 , but pressed on to Ullapool for the ambience. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Once I've had my fish & chips, ill up a pic or two. The car is a sensationally good thing. At low speeds, it a quiet and soft and I'm thinking the missus would like it, then you wring it out and it is the real deal. Very impressed.

Hoe you are having a good time mhh I'd be very interested to hear at the end of the week's hire - if you could only have 1 car - 991 or 997 turbo S. Which would you have?

Considering what you can easily pay to rent a race car for a single day, that's pretty cheap!

The answer is I wouldn't swap my Turbo S for the 991 Carrera S (mostly because of the power - duh - and the steering feel) but I wouldn't like to have to chase a well driven C2S in my Turbo. And, if I was in the market (was there a thread about this?) for a car today, I'd probably choose the C2S. The chassis of the 991 feels much more composed. It actually reminds me of the 458 in terms of poise over midcorner bumps. I've nearly had a couple of moments in my Turbo over bumps that the 991 would shrug off. Some of the single track stuff today would seriously unsettle a 997 at the same pace.

And yet you think 4k is OK for a business class flight, please let me know who you fly with because I travel long haul every week and have yet to find an airline worthy of 4K for a flight.

Do this, because life is too short not to: ScotlandSomeone will come along in a moment and tell you there are better routes etc, yes I know that, this is just a pointer. Head North my friend and take plenty of petrol coupons with you. Two weeks touring the highlands in my GTS was worth the entire 80K purchase fee (and better than 1000 business class flights).
