991 satnav full postcode query / update possible ?
Discussion
I took the plunge and finally put the deposit down for a 991.. should take delivery late in the week after they have the wheel repainted satin silver (oh yes) and wheel changed to sports design with paddles..
BUT it does not have full postcode, the salesman was pretending he didn't know if new ones did have it. Is there any way i can insist on software update of the car before delivery you think ?

I would say you could insist BEFORE you hand over any deposit, but even then once they've got your money they may struggle to deliver the update for you.R
I was in my OPC a few days ago with my 3 month old 981, stressing that I expected the full post code support to be retrofitted without charge, as it would be wrong to punish those people that took Porsche on faith and ordered the 981 before the launch, so soon after launch, when a retrofit is almost certainly just software and should cost next to nothing.
Congrats on the 991!

I think it's worth trying, though I doubt any update is ready yet for dealer implementation.BUT it does not have full postcode, the salesman was pretending he didn't know if new ones did have it. Is there any way i can insist on software update of the car before delivery you think ?

I've got the "old" 991 PCM and I don't miss the postcode search at all. It will already pinpoint the correct street using the first 4 digits, eg LS1 4xx, how much help does one need to find a location?
I think I'd be worried it might not work so well after the update flash!!

He probably has no idea. I don't think the update is available yet, but you could request it be added when it does become available.R
Some discussion around the issue: http://www.boxa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=5453...
I don't know if this is related to the imminent maps release or not (this autumn IIRC), or if this is a different software update.
The current maps in the 981s I've played with still don't have the Hindhead Tunnel on them!

dont think so.. never has.. would you rather have an inbuilt, integraged OEM look.. or a separate device hanging somewhere which you have to plug-in to keep charged.. with an awful craddle to keep it in place.. when you have spent close to 100k for a car..
am more intrigued about what the software upgrade entails.. if there's complete map update for example.. and other bits and pieces i might think about it. if not.. i will just wait and buy it when there's a major release..
p.s. when i had my 2009 Mini Cooper S they wanted to charge me to get my iphone 4 working allegedly because car was only able to accept Iphone 3... they asked me 500 to update saying that results were not guaranteed.

Porsche's support for customers with the various generations of PCM is nothing short of scandalous. I've been buying Porsches since 1984 and it's my only real gripe with the company.
In the main PCM works well, and I can live without full post code, but there really does need to be an affordable facility to update the PCM at service, so that we can all have the convenience and confidence of the latest system and mapping.
I have a '10 Turbo and '11 Cayenne and recently enquired about updates. Apparently it's a fairly simple hard drive download that OPCs can do. They get a software code and just connect a lap top that does the work. Cost? £600!!!
So, what we have is:
- Customer 'badwill' because the PCM goes out of date and it's uneconomic to update
- Porsche get no business from customers updating because they have over-priced the facility
- PCM gets a bad reputation, maybe even impacting on residuals
All it needs is a simple subscription service. Say, £100 pa and you get a free upgrade at service time. Most customers would be happy, Porsche would have an income stream and PCM would be seen as a long term asset.
Meanwhile my '73 RS has a £120 Garmin with full post code and I can update it myself

Unbelievable that a manufacturer could even consider shipping a new car with a sat nav that doesnt do postcodes. This isn't even 5 year old technology, it's 10 years old!
WTF?
+1WTF?
Porsche maps still only get upgraded every 2 years, if you're lucky. My Cayman S was running on maps that were 2009, kept apparently driving in fields, etc if the satnav was to be believed.
Ridiculous on a prestige car.

Pretty much, this is at OPC Leeds but they don't seem to know much as keep saying the software issues are managed by Reading etc etc. I told them no way I would pay for that and asked if at least it updates the maps. Again they don't know and need to get back to me.
I've just been quoted £471.00 to update my PCM to get full postcode search on my 2010 Cayenne which is madness as my portable Garmin cost £130.00 and gets free updates for gawd knows how long. Has anyone been able to get a 'cheaper' version at all or this still an irksome Porsche problem?
