resale is 1k less PCM costs 2.2k ?

so you make a lost buying PCM which ever way you look at it.

Makes more appealing, all indies ask for this when pricing.

Much as I hate having excess wires and devices around my car, a Wallee M magnetic mount for my iphone/ipad mini is discreet and provides me with FAR better nav than the PCM 3 in my 997.2. When I bought the car, OPC offered me a 'special' price of about £480 for a map update and about the same again to provide the sport chrono engine maps. Stuff 'em, thought I and I will not pay for inbuilt satnav on any new vehicle I purchase. I see that Porsche do now offer another overpriced option that gives you everything but the satnav for PCM for about £1100 rather than the £2.2k of PCM+satnav, so I guess more and more people are starting to question the satnav-at-all-costs mentality.

So is this still the case with the 991 Sat Nav? is it chocolate Teapot?
I have found mine to be excellent, correctly predicting traffic delays and guiding me around them on a number of occasions, I admit that I've not used it on the continent but speaking as you find it has worked really well, even recalculating the route and stopping me getting back on to a heavily congested M3 after another redirection. It seemed to be well ahead of the local radio announcements warning of tailbacks...

I always specify integrated PCM, with the various modules, on a new Porsche.

And, at point of purchase (i.e. new) it's usually up there with the better systems.

However, one of my biggest criticisms of Porsche is there abject failure to support customers who have invested in PCM, with a cost effective updating service. In my experience it is the source of a lot of 'badwill', and something that could so easily be offered as a service add-on.

Sir, would you like your PCM updated to the 2014 software - £99 + vat (or whatever)?
Customers would do it as a matter of course, Porsches, new and used would have a reputation for a really good navigation system, and OPCs and Porsche would be seen dispensing 'goodwill'.

It has to be better to have an integrated system rather than stick something to your windscreen with cables draped all over the dashboard.

Doesn't seem to bother some people, but it certainly does to me.

Of course they ask if a car has it, as I said it knocks 1k off a car, they need to value it.

But if you bought it for resale, you are still over 1k out of pocket.

Fair point, even my 2009 bmw allows me to email it maps/routes direct from Google using an app from an ipad/phone, track its location remotely etc.
PCM3 does a job but you don't get that 'connected car' experience.
Not complaining, just a point of fact.

PCM obviously adds value at re-sale, but clearly only a % of what it cost new, but that's true of all options.

Buyers spec PCM, and any other options, for their convenience during ownership, not re-sale.

Agree but would take ages to sell without?

If money is no object, tick the sat nav, if you are on a budget spend your money on better options.

If you are buying a road going Porsche I think it's a must have.

It may not be the very best on the market, but I've used it on a couple courtesy Porsches and it's actually pretty good, especially with the display in the instrument panel.

Most of us buy Porsches for their driving and performance qualities, but like the Bose, park assist, xenons, heated seats, etc, it's nice to have there as part of the overall package.

Im on my third 911 now, (997 turbo), and am still at a loss as to how a high end manufacturer can be so behind the game when it comes to in-car audio and satnav equipment. They seem to be (and have been) years behind low end cars with basic stuff like Bluetooth, touchscreens etc.

These are expensive cars for crying out loud, who does the in car stuff and why have they still got jobs?

Didn't touchscreens come in with the last of the 997 models (PCM3 ?)

I believe so. Years after you could get them for a pittance on ebay.

nope buy a 05 Cayman and that has the PCM sts ville.

and the one next to it is 1k cheaper and does not have it, I would buy the 1k cheaper car.

the older the car the less PCM is an issue and if the cars 1k cheaper I would say the 1k cheaper car might sell quicker.

PCM3 touch screen is better but only on later cars, I guess people then want PCM.
but watch out for the £500 full post code upgrade price lol

Hi, realise this is an old thread, however.
Looking to purchase 2008-09 Boxster and have the same question; SatNav or no SatNav?
Is anybody out there with a car of this year, got an up-to-date status on this?
Should it be on my list of should have?

PCM2 is rubbish, much better with a decent phone holder and Waze or Google Maps. Even if it was PCM3 I still wouldn't bother as it's antique.
