Yeah spend another 5k to get one that is straight, then realise it needs 8k spending on it mechanically
these cars are not cheap to run, if you spend 2K or 50K on your purchase the cost of maintenance can be around 2k a year or more depending. You must remember these are a 80k up car and the parts are not cheap.

Thanks for the feedback, it kinds of mirrors what I said to him. As for the running costs he already has a 996 so isn't unaware the sorts of running costs involved in Porsche ownership.

He's owned a well-repaired Cat C before which came with stacks of receipts and photos of the repairs.

Oh well, I hope it turns out to be a good a car for him then.

Photos are key. Absolutely crucial infact, so it sounds like he'll check the right things. Keep us updated.

I think that (aside from the interior) the car looks awesome - not dated like many 996 tt s are beginning to look -
Eh?
Only difference are the wheels and they are a dogs dinner the late 997 turbo wheels.
Think a standard turbo with standard parts looks far better, subtle is more.

Was it the CAT C status in the end, or didn't the car live up to expectations on the viewing?

He said 'gut feel'. He's still on the lookout for a 996 Turbo now though.

Join the club smile

I actually quite like the look of the white one (though I'm not sure I should admit that). If you could get a clean bill of health from an specialist inspection it'd be a tempting way into 911t ownership.
However, I suspect most will do what I did - shy away because of the Cat C status and the associated worry about selling on in future. In theory, a 911t should be a reasonably slow depreciator, but all bets are off with a damaged/repaired car IMHO.

A good friend of mine has recently bought this car and i'm just seeing what i can find out about the car. He has had an indepenant inspection on the car just for piece of mind and everything looks straight and as it should. It's also booked in at Porsche next week to get an overall inspection done. Will keep an update on here just incase anyone knows or has any history/photo's etc.

Is £2k enough to cover costs of a 996 turbo (excl insurance and petrol) I would have budgeted more like £4-5k?? I have no experience but I am interested. A friend had a 996 c4 and he seemed to spend a min. of 2k per year to ensure it was in good condition.

I suppose it depends on the state of the car you start with. There are the usual Porsche issues - front rads, air condensers etc and relatively pricey consumables (disks etc).

However, the 911t engine is a relatively safe bet. With a new clutch (and possibly turbos) I would have thought the 2k would be do-able if using a good specialist for servicing.

2k is probably about right.
As has been said will vary from car to car, and also vary according to recent work done, but it would have to be a complete dog of a car to need £4-5k every year.

With decent and dilignet maintenance, these cars are generally very reliable and not too expensive to run. That said, £1k(+) bills can come out of the blue, so to run one of these cars you need to be in a position to afford that should it happen.

£2k is about right I'd say. My major was about £1,650 this year I think. Minor was about the same last year, because there were a few other issues I got sorted at the same time.

I think mine probably costs me about £3k in total a year - but tax, insurance and MOT is about £1k of that.
