Just an aside, I was told that although the Super Sports were out of stock (for overnight delivery), they may have an internal Porsche warranty waiver currently applied. Which means if you have an OPC warranty, you can fit the non-N rated MPSS tyres without fear of reprisal.
I had a number of warranty claims (clutch pedal switch x2, ignition barrel, battery and starter motor) with MPSS.

BUT, OPC would not renew warranty with MPSS fitted.
What model Porsche was this on SFO? Also did you get a chance to really lean on the MPSS to get an impression of performance? I've heard real mixed reports re MPSS especially on 997.

7.2 GT3

IMO, MPSS not as sticky as P Zero Corsa which my car came with.

MPSS also seems to offer a slightly stiffer ride.

Just as noisy, if not more so.

however, it the wet, MPSS is more reassuring.

Interesting keep us updated on how you get on with them pls. You should try Cup 2 or P Tropheo R next just as a comparison. The Cup 2 isn't bad in the wet at all

Only took me 4 months to spot this reply! D'oh!

Still running the turbo, though it's a weekender only.

Dear all.

Car has been taken for 2 year interim service at Tonbridge and has approx. 50k miles on the clock (approx. 12k miles November 2012).

I have found the 'Turbo talk-down' thread amusing to read, I have driven this car longer and harder than expected simply because its so good to drive.

The car was improved somewhat by the fitment of the Cup 2 tyres. They do transform the car in terms of noise and handling although I do find the tyre frustrating at times because pressures can be all over the place, they take alot of warming up and its hard to tell whether they need air in them or not. I was originally running them at 2.5 front and 3.0 rear (hot) because that is what the intermediates usually run at. A quick google shows however that this is not the case for the CUP 2's and they need less pressure than that. I had problems keeping them at optimal pressure so keep this in mind if you intend to run them as a road tyre.

When they come off the car for the winters, I will do a tread depth check and report back on how much has been burnt on the CUP2's since they were fitted. These new CUP2's are supposed to be longer lasting than the CUP1's - I hope so as they are really expensive.

No real tank-slappers to report with the CUP2's on although, I would state that the whilst these tyres do aquaplane at 100mph (go 4 wheel drive and electronics!), they feel pretty solid going through a lake of standing water at 60ish. Well done michelin.

There is a list of work to be done on the car and as well as the mechanical servicing she has been booked into SL restorations in Crawley for some paint (minor niggles) and removal of protection film.

FYI - Tonbridge Coachworks are no longer the 'approved' main-dealer Bodyshop for Porsche Tonbridge, SL Restorations are. This is no slight against TC, all the work I have had done there was first rate but I would assume that people on the board would like to know this for future reference.

The service work includes the following:

- Fitment of Winter Sottozero 2 tyres (el nino hedge)
- Air-conditioning re-gas
- 2 year interim service
- All fluids, inc. PDK Clutch fluid
- MOT

I did consider the sat-nav postcode upgrade but its gone up to £400 and because the nav has been pretty solid without the upgrade I decided against it for now.

hey matey, more power always a temptation.

Finance agreement and guilt of modding her is keeping me on the leash for now.

Better late than never on that spot with the GT2. I really love the car, still looks great.

Regarding my own progress, I have completed around 1.5k miles on the Sottozero winter tyres.

The tread depth and pattern obviously a major step up from the Cup 2's and I am very happy with them. In terms of noise they are between the Cup'2 and the Bridgestone intermediates.

In terms of tyre pressures, the tyres appear to go up to optimal operating temperature quicker than the fluids inside the car i.e. under 10 minutes.

This is one of the major differences between a winter tyre and the Cup 2's which are very difficult to get up to the correct temps (and thus pressure) in cold conditions.

On a run from Liverpool to Manchester and back again the other night with heavy rain and air temp around 4.5C the car felt keyed into the road.

My experience with the Sottozeros is that they are more of a sportier winter tyre than the Michelin winter tyres approved for use with the Cayman and Boxster, the sidewalls appear to be much slimmer.

My MPG has gone up around 10% since the switch from the CUP'2, I am now averaging somewhere between 24-25MPG on motorway runs.

Really enjoying the thread Carl - thanks for posting.

I have a 997.2 4S and threads like this really don't help with the eternal question of "why didn't you just get the Turbo".

I did have one question though - twice earlier in the thread you mention "driving out of the car wash". Surely you don't let rotor brushes touch your beast?

until they turned it into an M&S we had a fairly good and modern auto wash at the local bp station (Chislehurst) which covered me through the winter months. as a general rule I don't clean my own car October-March. I don't see using the newer machines as a problem with the two flat colours I have had. although I can't prove it I think it generates less swirling than washing by hand. I have heard some horror stories but I nothing but good things to say about them.

I now use a local (ollies posh wash) who clean it by hand during winter.

There must be a pistonheads experiment that can be done about this. Interesting though, I avoid the automated ones like the plague, but on reputation rather than experience.

This will be one of my final entries as I have reached an agreement in principle to sell the car.

I put over 40k miles on the car in almost 4 years, it has been an incredible drive.

It is now time to hand the car over to another enthusiast out there who will enjoy it as much as I have and will continue to take it to shows and hopefully 'show it some road'.

Once the car is sold I will let you know what dealer it is at. I am coming towards the end of my finance deal and did want to trade it in for another Porsche. They have gone down a path with the 991 that I can't currently follow.

So, this June I go to Las Vegas speedway to test out half a dozen cars back-to-back, the list will include the 570S.

In the meantime, whilst I figure out if I actually want to drive a sports-car that is not a Porsche, I will be driving a 2016 Polo GTI on a cheeky £200pm lease deal. I missed out on the Golf R lease fire-sale frown

It's a shame that Porsche don't have an offer to satisfy an obvious Porsche enthusiast. Whilst I've enjoyed a 991 for a weekend I have no desire to own one, current 997 C4s manual still does it for me.

If anyone is in the market, the winter tyres I purchased for the 997 Turbo are now up for sale on the PH Classifieds.
