New Porsche Boxster revealed
New Boxster -- bit faster, looks much like old Boxster
On sale in the UK from 27 November 2004, the new Porsche Boxster looks little changed from the model it replaces. It does though offer increased power from its proven 2.7-litre and 3.2-litre flat-six engines in addition to a host of other developments.
- Power is up to 176 kW (240bhp), 8kW (12bhp) more than previously.
- The performance of the Boxster S, which will be launched simultaneously, has also been increased to 206kW (280bhp) from 191kW (260bhp), while capacity remains unchanged at 3.2 litres.
- The Boxster takes 6.2 seconds for the sprint from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph), while the S model achieves this in 5.5 seconds.
- Top speed is 159 mph (256 km/h) for the Boxster and 167 mph (268 km/h) for the Boxster S.
In addition to the power increase, the new Boxster sports a revised chassis with larger wheels and a wider track, enhanced active and passive safety. The 2.7-litre Boxster now has 17-inch diameter wheels as standard, while the Boxster S features 18-inch diameter wheels.
The new Boxster also features a revised five-speed manual transmission, with the S model benefiting from a new six-speed gearbox. The gearshift had been revised for both transmission variants so that shift travel is now considerably shorter. Both vehicles can be optionally equipped with the five-speed Tiptronic S transmission.
The new nose clearly shows a relationship with the 911 series but remains characteristically Boxster. New lighting sees the separation of main headlamps and front lamps with integrated fog lamps.
When viewed from the side, the larger rear air vents, door sills, larger window glass area, and newly-designed, larger diameter wheels are dominant.
It all "symbolises the increase in performance of the two models", according to Porsche.
Porsche reckons the Boxster is the first roadster in the world to offer passengers protection against lateral impact using head airbags. In combination with a thorax airbag, concealed on the outer side of the backrest, the airbag deploys from the side window rail of the door and provides a very high level of protection for the head.
Porsche has played it safe by implementing upgrades which are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. This in itself is what's made Porsche one of the most profitable motor makers ever. They will undoubtedly sell by the shedload.
The Porsche Boxster will be priced at £32,320 (inc. VAT) and the Porsche Boxster S at £38,720.
Dash is perhaps a bit more mainstream but probably a fair bit more solid than the original Boxster item.
Seats bottoms look '94/'95 era 993/968 in design but bigger for bigger butts ;-)
Get used to it folks - they'll be plenty around soon enough!
Roll on the Coupe version.

An extra 20bhp isn't a big enough power hike to tempt me on that basis...
They are so afraid of making this car the car it deserves to be
Yes, since they think it would affect 911 sales. The new base 911 is 320bhp and the Boxster is a lighter car than the 911, so any more Boxster S BHP and the performance difference may be too small.
Remember, performance is a commodity used to make money!

The new dash is terrible - it looks like it could have come from any Korean hatchback. And are those airvents from something else, turned through 90 degrees?
I agree with such an expensive car you would have thought they put a little more inspiration into the design of the interior.
air vents look like their from the new mini although more dull.
