so... they changed the 911s headlights to make it look less like the boxter's... then they change the boxter's headlights to 911 style again. whatever, I still wouldn't buy it. I'd be more tempted if there was a coupe. anyways, I never saw much resemblance between the mr2 and the boxter.

I read the Porsche AG press release a few days ago which pointed out that the basic prices (before any local taxes added) were 9% and 6% (S and std respectively) CHEAPER than the outgoing model in Euro markets.

Does anyone have access to a copy of a current price list to see if the UK will be enjoying the same benefits?

By the way, agree on the presentation of the dash - looks like a high-spec Kia. Give me a late 993 C4 for the same money any time!

Now I am a 911 fan - owned a 993 and a 996.

But I reckon that the Boxster has created a double edged dillemma for Porsche.

Its sells well and makes money - which is critical for a car maker that is still independent.

But it also has the potential to embarrass the iconic 911, simply because it is less compromised from an engineering standpoint.

Lets be honest. We love 911's. Love their style, their character and their unique driving experience. But if you were designing a sports car afresh today, you would not design it with an engine ahead of the rear axle !

The optimum , perfect , Porsche would be a mid engined car with a 996TT engine or similar. Call it a more affordable Carrera GT if you like.

Granted, it would not be a 911 and maybe less iconic or even enjoyable, but it would probably handle more nicely (certainly it would turn in better) and be objectively at least a superior car.

We love the 911 almost inspite of its flaws. We cherish it because it is fantastic because of its fundamental shortcomings, and admire that engineering prowess has overcome the inherent design "wrongness" of having an engine at the rear.

A 996TT engined Boxster would probably be the best car Porsche could ever make. We may enjoy the 911 more, but by any outsiders objective view the Boxster would be a better car.

This is Porsches big problem. The engineers at Porsche must know that a 400hp Boxster would be an awesome car. It may not be a traditional feeling Porsche like a 911, but to newcomers to the brand that may not matter.

But for now , at least, Porsche has not got the courage to consider that the Boxster ( or rather, a mid engined format) could be made to outperform the established 911 format. But some day they will have to face this conundrum.

And there may well be a generation coming through who don't care about the rear engined feel of a 911. They just want the best car possible. And the best car possible, may have to include an engine in the middle not at the back.

The 911 in my opinion is unique for its combination of [rear engined]traction and its 2+2 layout.

For this reason it is superb as both a Grand tourer , stuffed full of luggage or for those like myself with small children.

The 400bhp mini Carrera GT would be another niche for Porsche to exploit, for sure a car could be engineered to compete with the Gallardo or 360, but would it be a Porsche?

err toppstuff typo- 'ahead' of the rear axle would make it mid or even front engined

"Offal" - the inedible remains of a butchered animal.

"the inedible remains of a butchered animal." = HAGGIS

Food for though, an interior like haggis ?

Yep, Porsche could step over the dogma's and make a mid-engined, 300+ bhp car. An NSX by Porsche and why not.

approx. 275 bhp Boxter
approx. 350 bhp CGT
approx. 400 bhp '911'
approx. 500 bhp turbo.
Skip the Cayenne and re-badge it (Lexus like) and bring in a 450 Bhp 928.

That would be

911 Handles like an old beetle on steroids on a wet day. Put a serious bhp engine in the new coupe boxster and it will out handle the over priced jurassic park 911 any day.

Does anyone know how long the waiting list is likely to be? Are dealers taking orders now? I like it!
