Hi all, just asking whether anyone knows - are the 997 Gen II LED rear light units a straight swap into the Gen I (non LED) light housing (i.e.: bolt straight in with no rewiring or electrics changes needed)?

No, they are a different shape, it can/has been done but you'll need new rear bumper too and a fair bit of messing around.

I think there is akit available to give gen 2 rear light look to gen 1, no new bumper required.

They are different and not worth the faff of new bumper etc.
however there are aftermarket versions available that give the gen 2 look and seem to work quite well as a direct replacement. I have seen a few on here who have done it.

You missed out the "IMO" there ?

.2 lights and rear PU transform the looks of a .1 997 and well worth the "faff" IMO.

I have to say I've seen these Dectane units fitted to a members car (pictures) and they looked pretty good to me.

Well I suppose I did miss the IMO. I will give you that one!

If you can get hold of a cheap bumper as per your other link then why not. But IMO it never will be a gen 2 and those that know these cars will know that. Whereas just changing the light units for some which are LED makes the car look immediately more modern and more in line with the current styling. IMO!!!!!

Who gives a st what "those that know these cars" think ? If you actually own the car (as opposed to a finance/flipper junky) you can do WTF you want with it and the newer lights and bumper give it a great modern look IMO

I have a gen 2 997, and love the newer style led lights.

The leds from Dectane etc. make the gen1 look fantastic! So much more modern. It makes me wonder why I spent all the cash to get the more modern looking gen 2!!

Another vote for the Dectane lights - I fitted some lightly-smoked ones to my GT2 and have had many positive comments. The lights are a direct replacement for the originals and haven't triggered any warning lights. Highly recommended.

I'd go for the plain lens type myself. FYI, they have three types, one semi-smoked...

Heard back from the supplier - 2-year warranty on these and the black box behind the unit (in the photos) ensures that the electrics doen't send an error/warning message to the dashboard.

I think the dectane lights are all chavvy!!! IMO

I have to agree with Toby that the Gen 2 rear is well worth it IMO, I have done this myself and know a few who have the dectanes and they look crap in comparison!

Car still looks dated but with LED's so what was the point?!
