Such a common problem on various 4x4 - X5, ML etc They usually get water logged - seems crazy that a motor in/around the gearbox on a 4x4 vehicle could be designed to be so vulnerable and/or the component itself is not made to be more resilient. There'll be a lot of people driving about not realising that they can't select low range if they need to (I may even be one!).

i've tried not to touch the low range selector on mine for fear of it having issues. I checked it when I test drove and a couple of times after with no issues but not for at least 6 months or so, not knowing the mechanics involved with the system would the general consensus be to give it a go every week or so to keep it moving and hopefully prevent it from ceasing or leave it alone!?

Consensus seemed to be to engage it and use it at least once every few months.

If it does get stuck then it is very easy to fix. The motor is right under the drivers seat, lock out the suspension and you can get to it by just sliding under the car. 3 bolts on the motor, 2 others on a bracket that will almost certainly thread themselves when you undo them (the thread extends out of the rear of the bracket and they corode, ripping the thread out as you undo them!)
The motor then just slides off. With some mole grips on the spline and the car in neutral, foot on brake, it will turn pretty easily.
Then you just need to align the motor and refit it.

We had the water leak issue too, I forgot about that! Passenger footwell was soaked. I took the drain plugs out of the bulkhead drains as they didnt seem to do anything other than collect leaves. I didnt have a dehumidifier to run in the car so used a wet/dry vacuum and pulled out over a litre of water. Then the secret trick of using some of the baby's nappies to do the rest! I stuffed several under the carpet and changed them every few days!

Thanks 5678, I have been considering tackling the drain plugs, seen a few guides on it online, sounds like a worth while bit of preventative maintenance from your experience!

It's quite easy. Iirc I took the arch liner out and could reach them from there.
