Mental running costs i looked into buying one a couple of years ago and couldn't justify plus i didn't want the worry of the little irritating electrical problems and other issues on the older ones especially if you're buying on a budget
I bought a Touareg in the end as i favoured a diesel. I have since got rid of that aswell 21-22mpg my missus was getting and thats a diesel!!

A friend of mine has a 3.2 KN and he gets 12-15mpg
Part of the appeal of them for me is that it is a daily hack. So I plan to ignore the more minor problems - assuming they're not too annoying!

12-15mpg isn't really that much worse than using my 996 turbo on short journeys (averages about 19mpg) - plus I don't pay for my petrol anyway. smile

Well, collected this last night - drove straight to a petrol station and put £100 of super unleaded in it...... sure it will last ages though. wink

I've seen lots of comments about Cayennes handling more car-like than what you'd expect from their size - but for me, driving on unfamiliar roads, in the dark with an outside temperature of around -2 it felt exactly like a big ponderous car! However, since I'm used to a 996 turbo as a daily car I'm sure I'll get more used to it.

A few issues which need sorting out. The boot doesn't stay up (I already knew that) - but the replacement struts came with the car, even though they've not been fitted. Unfortunately, although I knew it didn't stay up I forgot - I was reminded when it landed on my head.

When I viewed the car, I checked the CD changer worked. I was surprised they only had one CD in a 6-disc changer, but at least it worked. When I got home last night I discovered they probably didn't only have one CD in it - I put 6 (quite new) CDs in, and it only recognised one of them.... But at least it plays it!

Radio quality didn't seem so great on the way home, or on the way to work this morning - I wonder if there is some radio booster issue. It was OK, but definitely a bit of interference sometimes.

I plan to order Dension (I think it's the Gateway 500?). I assume a 53 plate Cayenne will be MOST (is there a way to confirm?). My understanding is that Dension looks like the 6th CD to PCM, so even though the CD changer doesn't seem to work properly the Dension should be fine (if I understand it, PCM needs to be told there is a changer to use Dension, but you don't actually need the changer).

The funny thing is - the reaction to it at work.

I'm known for being into cars. The 996 turbo didn't get much reaction apart from other car people, because I'm sure it looked much the same as the 964 I had previously to non-car people.

My 348 was very popular, surprisingly even with totally non-car people who couldn't wait to have a ride in a Ferrari.

But the Cayenne gets almost as much attention as the Ferrari! All the people who have families are surprised to find that they could have bought a Porsche for the same / less than their current family wagon! They've all been peering in the windows (I can see the car from my desk) and are astounded at how little it cost.

I reckon I could stick £1k on what I paid and flog it several times over today!

I have a Dension in my 03, it works fine and the Bluetooth part works well with my mobile for calls. I think it's taken over from the charger in the boot (there is no cd cartridge in mine so can't check). I think it's a BT500, but can't confirm at present.

Thanks.

I browsed the Dension site earlier and it looks like you can now get a GW500S - which means you get Ipod + BT in one unit (with mic). Means I would need to mount it in the dash area I guess (was planning to put it by the changer in the boot, and stick the ipod there).

On another subject - when I drove the car last night / this morning I was in full auto mode. I changed to manual on the way back - what a laugh! Especially at low speed - change down to M1, and you really do get pushed back in the seat! Mental for a car of it's size - the turbo must be even madder.

So much for being sensible.....

Went to see a sub-£10k (4.5S) Cayenne on Saturday. Seemed like a pretty good car - had the major mechanicals / weak points all sorted recently. Had the options I wanted (air + heated seats), decent service history and a new MOT.

Still wasn't convinced I needed one, so set a max I was willing to pay and decided to let that determine whether I bought or not. Offered a bit less than my max, but had to up the offer to my limit and that secured the deal.

Pick it up on Wednesday evening. Still not sure this was a sensible thing to do - there is light snow down here this morning, and my 996 turbo just shrugs it off. But looking forward to giving it a try - hope they're as good as people have been saying they are!
Lol... I've just done something similar. Looked at a a turbo loved it, needs a couple of bits doing. Was not paying asking price, made a cheeky offer and he said YES smile.

Pick it up Wednesday

After running a couple of X5,diesel sports( 22 to 26 mpg) depending on running, decided I really had to try a Cayenne.
Looked at a few diesels at £35k plus at the time (march 2012) then by luck found a 1 owner , same dealer service history,
04 model Cayenne Turbo with 31k miles at half the money, decided to give it a go..............Jeeezzzz its awesome.

Okay it does like a drink, 14/15 around the doors, but can do 21/22 on a quick run, also seen it doing 26 while following a meandering friend. But good god does it go, for a near 3 ton tank it's bloody stupendous. Can't see me ever being without one now. And it's a fab workhorse to.

And everything seems to move over when they see you coming.............wonder why :-)
