Rough prices, all plus VAT :

Air suspension "spring" + valve ~= £750
Window regulator ~= £80 (my 996 turbo one was £150!)
Water pump ~= £100
Brakes (pads + discs) ~= £700
Plugs + coils ~= £350

Filters (oil, air etc) were all in the region of £20 or less.

Strewth yikesyikes I must have been out of the UK for too long. Our local Porsche dealer in Leiria, Portugal charges €55 per hour labour plus IVA (VAT) at 23%. The local Independents of whom I have found one with a good working experience of Porsche(he used to work for them here) charge €25 per hour plus IVA.
They have said that they get quite a few "service" holidaymakers who pay for the cost of the holiday by getting major services done here as opposed to the UK and some other Northern European countries.
I now know why.

The prices I quoted were parts - i.e. 4 discs + brake pads all round. Not labour.

If you open the link it shows a metallic grey cayenne s for under 10k.

My turbo s is definitely NOT for sale......... at any price.

Thanks. Great cars regreat selling mine especially for how much they are worth now.

Would probably be interested in buying another 2005 or 2006 cayenne as an everyday car unbeatable.

Looking at getting a Cayenne soon (a little nipper due in July).

Planning to shift my 996 (see profile) and get a Turbo/s with a budget of around £15-£18k.

However- one of the reasons behind this was the impression of the N/A v8 having weak (ish) engines? The Nikali (or what ever it is), and turbo being bomb proof. (Yes, my 996 engine is supposably the weakest of them all; 3 years later all is well).

Reading most of the above is the v8 actually ok?

I could in theory keep my 996 C2 and get a Cayenne v8 for say £9k?

Would get rid of my MX5, and keep the E90d Msport for my daily...

Thoughts please!

I thought the turbo's didn't suffer the same engine problems as the V8s - but after I'd bought mine, I was told they can. So I am not sure they are quite as bomb proof as I thought (relative to the N/As anyway).

I saw enough (V8s) for sale with big mileages that the potential engine issues didn't worry me much.

Last week, I noticed mine tends to "smoke" a bit even when it's warm, and I did wonder if I was going to find I had a dodgy engine. I called 9E and James told me they do tend to steam (condensation) a bit compared to other cars and to see what happened when the weather warmed up a bit. Sure enough - once the ambient is above 6 degrees or so, the "smoke" stops and all is good - so no problem there. In fact, after the thorough service they gave it a couple of weeks ago he said he was 100% confident I had a strong engine with no issues.

I don't think I'd be put off the V8s - especially when you already have positive experience of the 996 NA.

V8 based model is the one to go for, avoid the v6 in the early models as very little diff in mpg. Just got my turbo back from major service, and to my surprise the coolant pipes and t-piece had already been replaced by a previous owner.

The Turbo is a fantastic car, it does so many duties so well. I've been lucky to have some great P-Cars, 993 C4S, 993 Turbo 968 CS plus my current GT2 and the Cayenne Turbo is just as good if not better in some areas.

The chap I purchased it from had no idea that they had been done as I used this to get the price down, lucky result. No doubt it will need something down the line to make up for it though ;-)

Thanks for the advice.

Got someone coming over this weekend for my car- if he haggles down too far; it wont be getting sold.

Will test drive both NA and Turbo and see what score is.

If the N/A V8s are not as bad on the engines as made out, I might go forth and purchase...

If you test drive a turbo you will be hooked ;-)

Drive the V8S model 1st or the Turbo experience may cloud your judgement too much. The V8S model is a great car but I find the Turbo altogether a different beast.

I drove the s, then the turbo. I bought the turbo. Even the fella selling the s told me the turbo was much better.

As I've said in earlier posts, it's not a straight comparison though. The turbo should be better - it costs more. And if Henry / Kam's choice is between a Cayenne turbo, or a V8 S and keep the 996 as well - then I know which I'd choose.

The Cayenne is amazingly capable for a car of it's size, and genuine fun on a twisty road. But it's not - and never will be - a sports car, no matter how much power it makes.
