Porsche 987 Boxster Spyder Purchase
Discussion
"""I would say to the OP watch your "lightweight philosophy(low spec)" idea as low spec is not what you really want. the st options cost nothing, as they were free to add back in and dealers did this A: because they were free and B: because they thought cars would not sell ,so speced them like they would a normal Boxster.
the better cars are all high spec and were quite expensive new, so don't be fooled thinking just because the car has a a Radio or sports seats it's high spec, as these type of options were free lol."""
having a radio/pcm added in to the spyder doesnt detract from the lightweight philosophy i mean we are only talking 3kg whereas something like pdk adds an extra 25kg which is even more than the 12 kg for a/c.so a fully loaded manual car is still less than 1300kg or less than a no frills pdk car.
to me a high spec car would have the nice touches that weigh very little ie painted roll bars, alcantara bits, painted wheels, pcm
imho the spyder spec of choice would be a manual standard car with pcm/radio/phone module, pse, short shift,sc and the nice alcantara steering wheel, handbrake and gearlever got this in my car and it just feels so right.
as for sale mine is one of the few 2012 model year cars and i would not let it go for less than £40-45k
imho the white one at silverstone looks a nice late 2011 model year car if pdk is your thing

.There is the odd moment I think it would be nice having one minus the radio and air con for the full ethos of it, but in reality these add more to the ownership than the perceived benefits of weightloss, especially as a road car.
Keeping the spyder wheels and buckets was a no brainer though. Plus they look great.
So the only added weight i put in was full leather, radio and air con which in the grand scheme of things don't exactly turn it into a heavy weight.
Even with a couple of these bits it will always be lighter than a typically specced boxster/S or even a normal boxster with no options for that matter.

This spec/weight topic is a bit absurd in my view. I don't think it will really make any significant difference to the drive or the value.
There are few cars available so any buyer will need to be flexible on specification and I doubt if any regular driver would be able to tell the difference of a few KG here or there.
At the end of the day, some creature comforts and toys are more noticeable, useful and attractive on resale than a minute difference in weight. With that in mind there is no "ideal" spec as most things are personal to each buyer.

Some funny specs around..
Why would you spec parking sensors and omit PSE?

I agree it's totally ridiculous. I mean surely there's a >15kg difference in the mass of typical owners! There are few cars available so any buyer will need to be flexible on specification and I doubt if any regular driver would be able to tell the difference of a few KG here or there.

40-45k for a spyder? Good luck. The one at the Bentley dealership won't sell at £33k.
You can only gauge so much from advertisements. The £33k Spyder you're referring to could be a little less than perfect in the flesh. When I was looking for mine I saw a couple, irrelevant of spec, I wouldn't have bought for £23k! Lets not forget, It's my experience that Porsche buyers tend to be the most critical on the planet. You often have to pay a price for perfection. Although £40k plus maybe a little to much in the current climate - both financial and meteorological.

Agree. Just winding Demon up - never want to let him off for that "spyders are back at 40k" price ramp thread =)Lets not forget, It's my experience that Porsche buyers tend to be the most critical on the planet. Yes, I'd quite like a spyder despite the issues previously discussed! What did yours go for in the end?
