can anyone tell me when the G50 gearbox came into being? Ref a 1985 B reg carrera 3.2, will it have a G50? if not, what were the issues with the preceding box? Ive driven 964s and very late model impact bumper 911s with the G50 but havent any experience of the earlier system.

mid 87 i think. D plate in the UK anyway. Not driven the older 915 box but it is cable clutch I believe and overall less smooth

G50 boxes were introduced 1987 with the 3.2 Carrera iirc. The 1985 model will have a 915 unit then.

are the issues with the earlier box simply in terms of slickness of gear change etc? or are there reliability issues? i dont mind a less smooth change - one can always get used to it - but are there any specific worries about the earlier box in terms of an ongoing reliable daily drive?

A private german Porsche site, www.dialog-911.de claims that the only difference between the 915 and the G50 box are the Borg-Warner synchromesh and the hydraulic clutch, which result in a smoother operation of the newer box. O.J. Häner writes explicitely that both types are equally robust in terms of durability.

The gearchange on my 89 3.2 which I had for nearly five years was fairly slick and pleasant to use. Once test drove an early 3.2 Targa with the 915 box and it was horrible. As per previous comment, both boxes are pretty strong.

I think you'll pay a small premium for a G50 3.2 but well worth it IMO.

I'm pretty sure the G50 was introduced in 1986 - indeed, on D plated cars.

A 915 'box with quick shift irons out most of the problems with the long throw change. I'd buy on condition of the car rather than just 'cos it has a G50. Having said that, given identical cars I'd buy the G50 one.

Didn't the introduction of the G50 coincide with the mild facelift of the 3.2 - rear fogs integrated into the reflector strip?....

Whether it's a G50 or 915, check the synchro on 2nd and third - most of them do crunch in 1st and 2nd, but if it does that in 3rd then it could need a rebuild.

In the Uk around October 1986. Easy to tell which one. G-50 has reverse away and up to the left, 915 towards you and down to the right.
