Patrick, it was the best when I had 225/45/17 all over. It may have also been better tyres but I found the breaking much improved (as they are heavily biased to push the front discs, probably 3 times as much as the rears).

I've just got a 996 and thinking about trying something similar. I'm toying with a couple of ideas -

17 inch in 205 50 front and 235 45 rear using 17 inch wheels from 987C.

Square 225 40 18.

I ran my track wheels (225/45/17) on my Boxster S when it was standing in for my broken 944 track car. The square setup suited it very well, really neutral I thought, and certainly not at all snappy.

Just a heads up if you have an AWD 996: Be very careful the revs/mile ratio between the new front wheels/tires and the new rear wheels/tires is close to the same as with a set of factory sanctioned summer wheels/tires fitted. The rear wheels/tires want to make a few more revs/mile than the fronts so the AWD system works as intended and one doesn't fry the viscous coupling too much speed difference between the front/rear wheels/tires.

WTF is this thread about?
Saving £50 and putting skinny tyres on a Porsche??

Its like starting a thread ' Down sizing penis to a five inch stump'
It saves me 5p a day as it takes less toilet roll to dry after a leak.

There should be a section on here called 'I can afford to buy a Porsche, but want to skin turds on running costs and make it look st into the bargain'

I can safely say my Boxster is far more fun and involving to drive since putting skinnier tyres on it than the ridiculously wide 18's it came with.

I've yet to drive a car which handled better by putting on bigger wheels and tyres than the factory designed.

What size are you using now?

I've found the new ps4 available in 17 inch sizes 205 50, 225 45 and 235 45.

Exactly the problem I am facing. I don't have any way of trying it without buying everything. I was toying with the idea of using uniroyal rain sport 3 because they get good reviews but I'd consider them as a good mid level tyre. The new ps4 is well regarded. By switching to skinny 987c 17 wheels I lose a big chunk of weight but then I'm stuck with 6.5 inch fronts and 8 inch rears. I guess I just suck it and see.

I know the 996 launched with a 205 50 and that was 20 years ago. In that time tyre tech has definitely moved on. The 205 50 has quite a few more options than the 205 55. I can't imagine a 205 making the car uncontrollable so if I have to deal with some understeer maybe that will make me a better driver. Especially if it can be overcome with more throttle. I don't like the idea of removing grip but I do like the idea of being able to explore the car's limits and right now they are too far away from me.

Wow

Maybe I need 205 50 on all 4 corners.

The standard 17" sizes of 205/55 and 235/50 on Sport Contact 3's.

In this size, your premium choices are essentially the Continental, Goodyear or Michelin PS2 if you want matching tyres front to rear. I went with the Contintentals because they were the cheapest by a decent margin at the time. A quick glance on Camskill has the Goodyears cheapest at the minute.

On that note, I didn't really notice any improvement in ride after changing from 18's which was a bit disappointing. Do miss the magic carpet ride of the M5, more than happy with the performance though.

I'll keep that in mind. I run the Asymmetric 2's on the Clio and have done on a 3 series and been impressed. What's the typical wear rate like between front and rear on these?

Great video! I'm definitely down-sizing my tyres as soon as I can (but not as mad as the vid).

I run my GT4 on slightly undersized Goodyear F1 ASs for road use (sep wheels with Michelin Cups for track)and it drives very sweetly - quieter and more refined.

I also run GY AS3s on a Clio Cup (mainly used in France) and they are definitely better than the Contis IMO.

If down sizing then does one buy performance tyres or more general tyres? I've heard good things about Michelin Primacy in terms of stopping distances.
