As I'm getting older I prefer not to run out of fuel and therefore keep a close eye on the gauge and "miles to empty". I often fill up just before the "consider range on fuel remaining" message, and therefore usually put in 45-50 litres, with my record fill being 55 litres, when according to gauge and trip I was close to running on vapour. Having checked the manual (!!!) I find the capacity quoted as 64 litres. I am clearly wasting a lot of time filling up with Optimax, and wondered how close others have run it, and whether my gauge and trip are particularly pessimistic?

Steve,
I had a C4S a few months ago, but when i was taking it to the dealership in Solihull to trade it in against my GT3 i decided that i wanted to run it as low as possible so they didn't get some free fuel from me (tight git eh !)
Anyway, i was proceeding up the M40 carefully watching the range against the next filling station, but when it went below 10miles the readout just went blank. I started to get a bit concerned to say the least !!
I managed to make the next filling station and decided that i still had a fair way to go, and that i had better stop being tight and put around 20litres for a comfort feeling of not wanting to go through this again.
When I got back onto the M40 i noticed that the 20litres that i had just put in did not register on the indicator as it was still sitting below the red line !!, I was miffed at this and started to think if i had a serious fuel leak or did i just splash the fuel over the garage forecourt.
I then drove for economically and desperately to another garage. I only managed to put in 45 liters and it was full, which made me realise that my guage was faulty.
When i got to the dealership, i told them about the situation, they informed me that this is a common problem with the 996 Gauge, that when you run it too empty, the indicator sticks to the bottom, and only a maximum fill up will move it !!!
So ended up giving away a full tank after all !!

Thanks for the confirmation that it's not just me. I have had a very similar sticking situation when putting a splash & dash of normal unleaded in to get to the next Optimax station, again leading to confusion, and only rectified by the next fill up. To try to answer my own question I ran to the needle just above the bottom, and "range to empty" showing 13 miles this morning. It then took 56.41 litres to brim, more than I've put in before, but well short of the specified 64 litres. Does anyone know how reliable and consistent the 64 litres is?
