Great article, makes a good comparison. Also makes a GT3 look a bargain in the process!!

Love the car but struggle with pricing even at £120k of used examples. They made a real mistake not sticking the mezger as it could have been the equivalent of an RS Touring.

Difficult as there is so much choice at this money. Aston DBS, 599, High Mileage/LHD 458, 430 Scuderia, California, Bentley CGT V8 and the list goes on. I'd struggle to pick the SC ahead of any of the aforementioned let alone a GT3, GT2, RS or turbo.

Will say one thing though - its the best looking 997 full stop.

Edited to say if they ever fall to £100k I think you'd have to buy one!!

I would choose one ahead of any if those non-Porsche choices, I really like them. It's not really a rival to a GT3, it's luxurious rather than a race car.

My pal that has one also has 458, California, DB9, 2.7RS etc. and he really rates it and uses it regularly.

Ironically, parked next to my Spyder at a car show 18 months ago, crowds flocked around the Spyder "it's not a Boxster love it's that one off Top Gear, d'ya remember with James May" and the SC may well have been invisible, it's certainly one for the cognoscenti.

It would be an easy decision to make if you were looking for rock solid residual value, none of the others are rare enough to hold that kind of price though. It does look perfectly styled, marrying the retro with the contemporary.

My mate has a sport classic and shortly after he picked it up I got a GTS. If I could have afforded the difference I would have gone for the SC without doubt. Parked side by side and as much as i love my car, my eyes are on the SC. 2 years on, i have lost circa 25k, he 15k (retail values, not kick in balls trade). Both fab cars, but as a keeper I believe prices of the SC will only go up. All about supply and there are not many of them! It's only when you get up close and see the detail that you can understand it. It is a totally different proposition to an RS. Time will tell.

I would definitely buy an SC if I had £120-150k to blow on a 911. Lovely looking car and I think a fairly safe place to put your money (in car terms that is... I'm not sure they are an investment).

I might struggle to spend nearly £150k on a 911 though when there are much more exotic options available at that price.

I think the SC looks great but I cannot get over the fact that it's just aping the looks of a car that is truly one of the greats.

The SC is not the inheritor of that tradition. It's far less special than it's modern equivalent (the GT3RS) and no amount of attractive leather trim and tasteful colour schemes can make up for that.

The Sport Classic is a stunning bit of kit.

It's one of those cars where the devil is in the detail and I think it works really well. On paper it probably shouldn't do but like really excellent food no one element overpowers the others. There are some strange and even brave ingredients in there but they blend perfectly.

Future value, who knows? If you want it and can afford it then it doesn't really matter. Compared to a luxury Mercedes it will be a bargain, compared to a sought after classic from a bygone era it may or may not fare so well.

If you live your life around the future value of things you miss out on an awful lot in life. It's the saddest fact of this bit of Pistonheads that every discussion seems to end up debating running costs or depreciation.

There was a time when demand far exceeded supply, and residuals were strong. The cost of change every two years from one 911 (or Mercedes) to another about 2 decades ago was minimal. Now it is a huge chunk. And which provides resellers a bigger cash margin.

Depreciation is probably the biggest single revenue cost for anyone buying a modestly priced new car, so really cannot be ignored. smile

All true but I agree with Henry... You're a long time dead. Enjoy these wonderful things if you can and don't dwell on the costs too much.

Still the same car. Can't see it at 300k however stunning the car is visually. Buy a GTS
