Wanted 993 Cab How hard !!!!!
Discussion
Having now spent 4 weeks looking for a decent 993 cab I have come to the conclusion that unless I spend 30K plus at a dealer I am going to get a stuffed !!!
I have looked on autotrader e-bay (only as a medium for advertising) daily etc etc.
But still can't find a good one, I have found several "showroom cars" only to get there and find out they are bashed and tired, I have covered about 1200 miles so far looking.
Am I looking for the impossibile ? My only real stipulation is air con.
Is it me should I give up and buy a 996 ?
Any advice or new places to look very welcome FYI I have tried the following so far :
Exchange and Mart
Autotrader
Top Marques
911uk.com
Pistonheads
911 Virgin
Northway

Looked at both 996 and 993 the main reasons for the 993 over the 996 from my personal opinion are as follows :
Negatives of 996 (for me)
996 feels a bit tinny 993 feels solid
996 interior of 99-00 cars with circa 40/50K on them look very tired (only the ones I have seen maybee not all)
996 cabs pricing seems to falling like a stone late 993's seem a little more solid
996 bit too flash for work 993 = old porsche for the average bloke in the street (work for myself)
996 very average drive 993 drives like a I imagined a 911 would (996 bit like my BMW)
The above are only my opinion no offence intented to anyone with a 996 !!! In fact I set out looking for a 996 cab !!!!

Your problem is your budget - despite what a lot of people on this forum will try and tell you, a decent 993 is a £30k plus 993.
You need to remember that these cars were expensive to buy when they were new and they are expensive to buy and run now as they get older. The 993 is a fairly complex car that does need looking after. Cheap ones have often been bought and run by people who couldn't really afford them and have skimped the maintenance - hence the sheds that you have looked at.
You should be looking for a FPSH and documentry evidence of £1.5-3k expenditure a year on non-service maintenance (my experience of what you need to spend if you don't want the car to deteriorate)
Try Paul Stephens at Paul Stephens Specialist Cars; I've had a couple from him now (& am looking at a third)

Phib,
Some good reasons there i think, not sure i agree with the tinny one though .
Anyway, have you seriously thought about a Boxster ??
IMHO, the best value Porker ever built, sounds like you should have the Budget for an 'S' version, which would be everybit as quick as a 993 cab in power to weight, and you could have a newer one too.
I think that anyone who puts them down for image, hasn't tried one !!

RSJ have a 993 targa in at the moment; look a lot better than the cabs IMO. That roof is a talking point as well, helps keep it modern. They don't have any 993 cabs in stock at the mo' tho'.
Boxster S is very good but if you don't like the 'look and feel' of a 996 you won't get on with it. To my mind, still lacks the character of an air cooled 911, but it's a much more modern proposition and handles sublimely on the limit.

Thanks for the replys guys just to come back on a couple of comments :
1.The boxter thing (I am just about to upset all male boxter owners now sorry) My mum has had two now a 2.7 and now a 3.2 and having driven both frequently its just not for me we have been round race tracks in the done the ring great car less scary than 911 and probably quicker in the real world in the hands of a non racing driver etc etc but I am still stuck with the opinion its a bit of girls car (probably as my haidresser has one as well), perfect for my mum but not me I also don't really fit in it properly sorry (I will get my coat now)
2.Re budget its not really about the money I have looked at everything from a 94 993cab £24k to a 996 4s cab 65K. Its really more about just having a good car in good nick without being stuffed by someone that thinks "because a 993 is the last real porsche" ( and I am not sure about that I would argue the GT3 is still pretty good if they made a cab I would probably buy one ) I am going to pay a massive premium.
3.Re tinny the best way of describing it is the clunk you get when you shut the door on the 993 v 996 if you know what I mean
4.Re targa too much of a half way house for me.
5.Re 993 cab for sale will e-mail
Thanks for the info guys

We have 2 on the website with another one going on in a couple of hours. From the initial question I think there is a simple answer. You pays your money and you takes your choice. At £25k a car is likely to be in "less good" condition than one at £35k. £10k "less good" ? possibly not.
I don`t think there is such a thing as a cheap Porsche. You asked if you had to spend £30k plus at a dealer, I think you`ll find the private man will want that and more for the same bit of metal being rather more emotionally attached to it than we hard nosed dealers !
I think some people also set themselves too high a scale of expectation when buying a car which is 8-10 years old, and that can cost them a lot of money. I`m not suggesting you rush out and buy a load of scrap but think carefully exactly what the differences are between the £25k and £35k cars.
Anyway I hope you find a car and don`t forget the factor 15 !

And I can't quite believe it but I have taken your advice, not nececariliy on purpose and have gone for a 97 car with slightly higher thatn average milage but in very good condition with a/c no new paint all the labels in the right place, fpsh, recent service 400 miles ago etc etc
Need's two new rear tyres one alloy refurbing and a new rear screen. (all been quoted for by the specalist) and taken account for in the price
So its fingers crossed for wednesday
