If he only feels safe with 10m of empty tarmac to his left, he should be banned from every single lane road in the country.

What a tosspot. It's lucky he wasn't in a radio studio being interviewed alongside me, as I would have felt compelled to give him a 'Glasgow Kiss' on behalf of the barrow boy wonder!

Thanks Dom.

I was going to phone in demanding this turd's immediate and total euthanasia, but there was no way I could have gone onto a show such as that without swearing.

A lot.

Some years ago, I came across a very effective bit of electronic signage on the M20 at the Leeds interchange. There was a large sign that actually displayed your registration number together with the warning that you were speeding (I was, too! ).

That must be easily within the state of the art today and I wonder why it isn't used more widely. It certainly got my attention and curbed my enthusiasm - a sort of

HEY YOU, (Reg No), SLOW DOWN!!

Well, I suppose if it makes the vast swathes of the numptista at least think why they're clogging up lane 2, and they do something about it, then it has achieved something.

For pure, undistilled blood pressure woes earlier, there was some geezer who phoned Radio 5-Live (who were having a phone in apropos this), and said he actually felt safer in the middle lane on an empty motorway, and people could move into lane 3 to overtake him if they felt the need.

All well and good kids, but our village idiot then went on to proudly boast he had a speed limiter (that he had fitted himself!!?) that prevented his car going above 70mph.

So, somewhere in the green and pleasance that is Britain 2004, there is some old fool gaily driving along at no more than 70 in the middle lane because "he feels safe".

Oh dear.

I can feel veins tightening in my head as I recount this.

Logan's Run, 1976.

The chant "renewal," methinks.

Whilst I think its great that the Highways Agency is finally doing something about this problem I think that the effects will only be felt for a few months. I think that whilst the messages are new, people will pay attention but after a while they will fade into the scenery and be ingored. More drastic action should be taken against lane hogs.

I meant to add that the words could as easily be

HEY YOU, (Reg No), MOVE OVER!!

If anyone wants a very limited edition sound file of Pass The Numpty On the Left Hand Side, as produced and aired at PistonFest on Torque Radio, featuring a 30 sec intro by Derestrictor ('Hail Albion!!!') then email me via my profile. Please state it is for research purposes (legally have to do this as copyright a bit hazy; I did the lyrics with help by Iguana, one member of Musical Youth was involved, but musically the ownership is not resolved as vocals by a talented friend of PistonFest.)

This is an excellent initiative by the Highways agency and as I left my Northants home this morning for my trawl up teh M1 I was looking for the signs. Unfortunately they were not switched on at 06:30 I am looking forward to the trip home tho - sad eh?

Last night coming home I did indeed undertake several cars on the M1 which I often do when the inside lane is clear for about a mile in between lorries stuck at 56 mph and the middle lane is chocka full of numpties who seem to find it hard to indicate and move over for a minute or so?????

The Highways agency website www.highways.gov.uk/ actually has some pretty good facilities being tested

You can see what all the matrix signs are saying at
www.highways.gov.uk/trafficinfo/

and the current motorway speeds are at:
www.realtime-traffic.info/index.html

They don't cover the whole country yet, but it does cover my commute and I check it before every journey home in case of blackages

I totally agree, people should have the right to speed and break the law anytime they want to (and pay the consequences if/when caught).

Below, by the way, is a pic of my '83 928S 5-speed with the eyeballs up. The eyeballs come up every time a good looking woman walks nearby. ("the 928 salute")

I cheered when I heard this on the news this morning!!

I guess that arse below who keeps in the middle lane is the one I have no option but to undertake because I have a trailer behind.....

BTW, trailers not allowed in the third lane of a three lane motorway...or is that stating the bl**ding obvious....

But one thing I've never been clear on, are trailers allowed on the third lane of a dual-carriageway?

A great idea to try to eradicate the truly thick who don't realise what trouble they cause by not moving over.

It's incredible that people actually have to be told about this.

I am beginning to wonder whether an IQ test as part of the driving test may be a good idea.

Sometimes I wish I had a bullet cam permanently connected to a video in my car, you would love the picture I could have taken this morning

There I am driving south down the M1 from Northants(service time at JZMachtech) when I come across a break in the inside lane of about half a mile. There is a lone Peugeot in the middle lane at circa 60mph and the outside lane is chocka with people passing him. Right above him is a 20 foot high sign emblazoned with 'keep left unless you are overtaking'. There is no hope

Napalm is too good for him

.....oh and when I passed him he had one headlight out

....and he'll continue hogging the middle lane because he's only doing 60mph which is within the speed limit so no camera will get him. This is typical of the government mentality in the UK. No traffic police in sight to get this kind of guy, who in my opinion should be banned for a minimum of 6 months.
