OK, i really need some help here. lets just say someone has had 5 great years with an elderly 944 2.7. lets say that person does about 7k a year pottering about, and lets say that person is interested in his porsche as a wonderful growly hairy chested engineering statement of perfection but has reached a point where he wants...MORE. He isnt interested in ultimate speed, nor in spoilers and fat tyres. He wants to get to 60 a bit quicker, he wants the engine louder, he wants to have fun hooning around country lanes. he wants absolute porsche PRESENCE. You know what I mean. He has looked at what he can afford - the 964 realistically - but feels just a bit underwhelmed by it. He finds a 1975 911 2.7 coupe and falls in love. But....its to be his only car and he really really really needs it to start each morning and get him to work each day. He knows very very little about maintaining such a car but has a reliable independent within an hours drive. Is he mad to consider this car? can a 30 year old car, even a porsche, be a reliable daily drive? and specifically what foibles, if any, are associated with the '75 2.7 coupe?

If your friend has found a car that has documented history to show that it has been properly maintained, then - why not....!

Where has your friend found the car - whats the history / details of the particular 911???

not that I dont have any friends but.. it's me that has the dilemma. the car has undergone a full restoration, bare metal respray, engine and gearbox rebuild. as far as I can tell, its as close to new as you can possibly get for a 30 year old car. but it is a 30 year old car and I dont have any mechanical skills beyond topping up the oil and writing cheques for the maintenance bills. its not the running costs that put me off - I doubt if they'd be that much different to the 944 - but I really do need a daily starter and I have no experience of relying on a car that is 3 decades old, even if it is "as new". hence the post. I have no use for a "garage queen".

more specifically I'm also interested in any particular issues pertaining to a 1975 911 2.7 e.g clutch, gearbox, oil leaks, rust etc etc

Yip pick the right one & no reason why you can't drive it every day.

However 2.7s are not very loved, the engine is not porsches best unit in terms of power or longevity & in 911 terms is pretty slow, so don't pay too much for it, although even tho its not that rapid I'd have a really nice 2.7 over a ropey SC.

Don't confuse the impact bumper 2.7 engine with the '73 RS or Carrera 2.7 (which is also impact bumpered just to confuse things) either, they are a quite different 911 flavour.

Iguana, are you sure you've got your RS and Carrera 2.7 the right way round? See you next Sunday then? I'll give you a call first (mible number still the same?)

Oh, and the 2.7 isn't one of my favourite cars either and I do echo Iguana's comments about not paying too much for one, restored or not. The engines weren't very strong and I recall them requiring rebuilds at ridiculously low mileages - petrol washing oil off the bores and weak bottom ends IIRC.
