I have done 1600 miles in mine with one trackway and have had no chipping. Im still contemplating covering it up but getting unsure whether it is worth it. The rear arches (where the factory fitted shield is) get a lot of dirt from the front wheels so there i would cover a bigger area but otherwise it is not too prone to chipping. I guess color is a factor so on a darker color you would see more chipping. With my Aston i got 90% of the chipping within the first week of taking ownership from the factory which means that the water based paint probably needs quite a long time to harden properly.
What colour have you got again ? smile

My worst chipping occured whilst in Scotland with the guys from Tartan Tarmac and others. The roads are fantastic though seem because of the inclement weather to have a lot of loose surfaces. Chasing down vehicles with large rear tyres (Andy GT3RS) meant that my poor car was spattered . My own fault of course so the thought is to try and minimise the problem.

I would guess that a total front end respray to Porsche Approved standard would cost somewhere in the region of £3000. Plus the rear arches take a hammering as well. Plastic for me then! It is a no brainer.
Also , I wonder how hard it is to respray and properly match all those different materials - I have no idea ?? smile

What happens with the film does it completely stop the chips or just hide them ?

Cars used to be sprayed with oil based paint which provided a certain amount of flexibility; now we are stuck with water based paint which just chips off on impact.
The film provides that flexibility but much much more so. It can be unbelievably effective. The other benefit of course is that new car shine is preserved under its plastic coat. My understanding is that a product called Sun Tech is reckoned to be the best on the market, its outstanding feature is that it is self healing. This is demonstrated by scrubbing a treated car bonnet with a brillo pad then pouring boiling water over the scuffs which then disappear.

Seems to me Richard that you are kind of pleased with your RS !! Thank you for your support those weeks ago as I honstly was beginning to believe ours was never going to happen.

Apparently it looked absolutely stunning. Would have been very interested to see it in the flesh as I'm currently waiting on a GT4 in the same colour. Probably wouldn't have made the wait any easier, though.

Hope to see it out and about in the area.

I'd highly recommend it. Either Suntek or Xpel as both self-healing. I have Suntek on my GT3 and will be having the Xpel on the GT4. For no reon other than the installer is closer to me.

After a similar experience on a trip to Scotland that saw the GT3 peppered with stonechips, after the subsequent respray I had it covered in PPF. Not a full wrap, but all the vulnerable areas. You can't even tell that it's on there. Even where two adjacent panels are one covered, one not. It's very very good stuff.

Absolutely not!! I actually think the areas that have it on look more lustrous. It's the equivalent of having an extra couple of coats of laquer.

Richard, you have Paint Shield in Peterborough, or Topaz in London. I am opting for Topaz who are prepared to travel to my OPC. The basics of what they do is to perform a complete paint correction to ensure that any sanding swirls or defects are removed. The car is then polished with some magic polish which leaves the paintwork almost looking wet. Colours like Lava Orange are transformed. The plastic film is then applied. Excel will be used on the more vunerable areas for example bumpers and rear arches. Suntek will be used on rest of the car including the lights thereby providing total coverage. The film is then polished.

I have a good friend who posted before and after pictures of his new 650S, you would not believe the difference that has been achieved. Your pride and joy has serious protection from the ravages of chipping, the sun and salt. He claims that just running a hose pipe over the car when it is dirty instantly restores it back to perfect condition.

It is fair to say that the whole process is not cheap. I feel it represents a sound investment to ensure your car retains its as new appearance.

My intention to do a series of photos as the car is treated which I shall post. It is a pity that I have not kept a picture of the front end of my GT3 which would demonstrate what the film will prevent.

I used Paint Shield. Very thorough and they'll even pick the car up in their trailer.
