Any would be great.

Have a search for the 993 v Boxster S threads that we have had in the recent past.

I have met a top PHer recently (called Polar993 who also lives in Newcastle) who has a 993. I have a Boxster S. On Sunday we went out in the country for a hoon and we drove each other's cars. It's the second 993 I have driven.

I respect 993s very much. They look and sound great. They aren't so good for daily driving as a Boxster S though. And the difference in power-to-weight ratio is pretty much nil.

I only really booted Polar993's car on the straight bits. He however, had the confidence to boot my Boxster S all over the place. I don't think this has much to do with handling, it's probably just that I am not familiar with the toadstool arrangement for the pedals of the older cars. I could heel-and-toe JUST but not as smoothly as I do in my own car. I also think the gear change was better in the Boxster S, but the 993 sounded better (louder basically, don't let anyone tell you a Boxster S doesn't sound any good, that's crap).

You need to sample all 3 cars and take it from there.

Drive em.......then decide. Don't let other people who haven't driven the cars put you off. There's a reason why Porkers cost a lot more, and you need to find that out for yourself.

Basically I work from home so don't have to deal with the daily commute.
The car gets used to go to the odd meeting/site visit, visit freinds and the odd blast at weekends and down to Lemans once a year. In total proberbly less than 6000 miles/year so the daily drive thing doesn't bother me too much, more of a concern is insurance, runing costs & depreciation.
The good thing about the 993 is that I'll be able to get a 10 year old model on a classic policy (I have a tow car for sprinting my Westfield)
I'd quite like a 993 but a bit worried about spending £25K then having extra bills ontop (seems like good ones are going for £30K-which seems quite expensive compared to early 996's) & i wounder if they will drop in price much???????

The other cheaper option is 2.7 boxster or VX220 Turbo, both available for £20k with low miles etc.....
I'm planning on having a test drive in a VX soon.
I need something faster than the 944 as on my trips to Lemans i go with a group of Westfields & have trouble keeping up (B$ you ask my Westfield although road legal is more of a sprint car 260bhp, full cage, small tank etc........)

Thanks for youe help.

Andy

P.S. 350Z not really in the equasion...nice car BUT

350Z nice looking car but it's got a DATSUN badge on the front and japanese cars values drop like stones when it comes to selling.

If you can't afford a 993 then get a boxter at least its got the right badge on the front, even if it has water in its engine.

Don't kid yourself that you'll get a decent 993 for that sort of money. If you want a Porsche for that, look at a Boxter S or a late 930 Turbo. Avoid the 964 as - lovely though they are - they are very expensive to run compared to the earlier and later models

Thats what I was thinking... & £25K is really at the TOP of my range £20K is more reasonable, think I'll try a Boxster & a VX220Turbo, I would also quite like an Elise but it would have to be the Vtec powered one & there min £25K & group 20 (the VX is Group 16)......

They are also about £8k cheaper to buy in the first place and the performance is on a par with the 993. You also have the more classic 911 front end if that's what floats your boat.

Err, beg to differ (a lot!).

I had a 993 C4S before my current C2, and at Imola a couple of years ago a friend tried to follow me round for a couple of laps, me in the bog stock C4S and him in his well sorted 964. Neither of us are novices, but we're not track experts either.

After a couple of warm laps, we started to get in to it. Down the first long straight i was pulling away from him by some margin, so slowed down for him to catch up, then we both hammered it around the 3 mile track.

Speaking to him later in the pit lane, he said he did everything he could to keep up, but within half a lap i was out of sight.

So, as i said, i beg to differ on 964 performance being comparable to 993...

Good example, although I would have been interested to see what would happened if you'd have swapped cars and tried again. I would guess that your wider track and tyres plus 4wd would help you to take the bends faster.

I was quoting from the stats I have (both from Car & Driver Mag)
964C2 993C2
0-60 4.8 4.7
0-100 11.9 12.1
Qtr Mile 13.3 13.4
Max 161 162

Hmmm, track is a little wider, and tyres too, but then i was carrying quite a weight penalty (me and the car!) which would have accounted for more than 100kg difference between the cars.

Also, the 4wd is not really called on in dry conditions at all - power goes about 95% rear and 5% front in normal dry conditions.

I'm sure the additional weight negated any power/grip advantage i might have had.

Yeah, shame we can't go back and swap cars... that'd be fun!

Straight line performance between a 964 with the basic mods (chip catbypass) and a 993 are very similar. Slightly less power in the 964, slightly more weight in the 993.
The advantage of a C4S on track is the superior brakes and the traction and stability contol not present on the 964 which means much more confidence about high entry speeds in corners.
