Change the hood cover to black and lose the snot rag and you've got a nice car... if you don't mind cabriolets.

Why not get a 996 and have a modern classic.
For 25K?
Almost

I'd imagine you could do better privately.

Thank You. Someone with some sense.
Many bagains out there, if you have cash.
No offence, but hte 996 is not a 'modern classic'. Modern - yes. Classic - no.
There must me a reason why older 993's are fetching more than early 996's.
If it was my £25k I'd be patient and look at a privately owned 993. There are good 993's out there privately for this money. Dealer £25k cars are quite so clever - but if you know what you're looking for you can find a good 993 for £25k.

Not that I'm biased, but for your budget you should be able to pick up a good late 964 with all the potential issues (top end, clutch/flywheel etc.) already sorted. The main additional maintenance over a 993 is the valve adjustment. You could also run to a LHD 964RS, though these seem to be appreciating now.

Why have an old car when you can have something new for same money, and yes i have had many 993s and 964s c2 and turbos. 996 seem good value next to over priced 993. yes i know 993 is air cooled. but lot of over priced 993s now because they have a strong following. 996 is an up coming classic. I had the same thing said about 993 when the 996 came out. ie that the 993 was not modern classic, then it had to be 964 or nothing.
I've tried to avoid replying to this thread, but what the hell
I agree that there's a distinct difference in tangible quality between the 993 and subsequent 911s... I won't argue that the 993 is better, faster, more well engineered, etc. as it isn't. In most objective criteria the 996 is a better, more modern car, and is also faster.
However the 993 feels subjectively like it was built with quality first and price second. The 996 may be a better car in all figures, but there's a real difference between opening and closing the driver's door on a 996, compared with the 993. Sounds stupid, and at this time of night it sounds stupid to me.
But the entire impression I get with the 993 is that is was built to last, sod the cost. The 996 doesn't give me the same impression. And if you're buying second hand cars, this matters. If you're never going to own anything older than 3 years then ignore this, but if you're umming and ahhing between a '95-97 993 and a '98-99 996, then try them both and take them both seriously, you may be surprised.
If you want a 911 to be The Man on the road, then the 993 isn't for you (I got regularly blown away by BMWs and Audis)... And I'm not going to cut'n'paste from my previous mails re: character, air cooled, etc. But they're the best car I've ever had the privilege to drive...
