Is the 991 GT3 the greatest 911 and Sportscar ever made?
Discussion
Like most of you I have been reading the new GT3 reviews for quite a while now and even if you don't agree with the direction Porsche has taken on some things, you can't ignore the steady and persistent claims from some sections of the motoring press that this car is the real deal and the best 911 ever made.
Its got me thinking, if this is true, then by association is it not the best sports car ever made?

I'm not sure there can be any such car as the "best xyz ever", as that always requires a subjective appraisal? Perhaps we could say that the very first car made is the best car ever, as without it we wouldn't have the rest?
As for best sports car, even to accept someone else's accolade of "best...", you would have to first define the parameters for a "sports car". Previous generations of GT3 have, in my humble, blurred the lines between road and track, whereby they are probably more bettererer on track, than they are on road for instance? It will be interesting to see really how much more "useable" the 991 variant is over previous iterations? I'm not sure a PDK box is the complete answer to "usability" as for me (even though I have done 500miles in 3 weeks in my PDK Cayman, compared to 1700 in a year with the GT3), the "usage" issue was mainly one of ride height/clearance rather than any issues with the gearbox?
Ps: still miss the Mezger lump

"Better"?!Something to travel very quickly and effortlessly in - towards to top
As a driving experience - towards the bottom
It seems that - these days - Porsche are targeting the former because there are a lot more of them ( who can blame them) On that basis - ie for the majority; yes no doubt it's the best.

I understand that is your opinion, but seriously what utter nonsense, when I doubt you have even driven it!As a driving experience - towards the bottom

Nope, and unless someone asks me to drive one that has all of the electronic aids on it turned off - including PASM - I wouldn't want to. I would suffer the gearbox, but please do not dish me up a car laden with a host of electronic driver aids and try to tell me it's a driving tool. Sorry Old Boy, that old chestnut doesn't work with me

Well said have to agree!!!Sorry Old Boy, that old chestnut doesn't work with me
Steve's opinions on PASM (certainly in the track/race environment), which are well known on PH and seldom (if ever) disputed, are drawn from experience, are very well put and make a lot of sense. On the road it's a useful tool to go from sporty/harsh to soft/compliant without getting anywhere near the cars limits.

Irrational to think you can have a credible opinion without having driven the car in question!
You don't need to drive it if you're in that camp, for me personally I love all cars, I loved my Escort Cosworth, I loved my Focus RS, I loved my GT-R, I loved my Scuderia and I'm loving my 997 GT3 and I dare say I will love my 991 GT3, embrace and experience all these motoring flavours for a richer life experience...alternatively...

I've read many informed and informative posts from Steve on this forum over a number of years, however his previous one in this thread does him no favours.I can appreciate his (subjective) opinion about the evolution of the GT3 and his expectations for the 991 version of the car, but his statements about a car he has not driven (and which are hugely at odds with those who have) are very disappointing, if not plain stupid.

It's the current flavour of the moment, and no doubt next year something else will be grabbing all the accolades. Its got me thinking, if this is true, then by association is it not the best sports car ever made?
The motoring press rely on superlatives to justify their role, but 'best' is normally subjective.
Everytime a journalist or magazine calls the 991 GT3 the best ever 911 or uses the term 'could be the best 911', I will place a link to the article in the OP.
