Good informative post OrangeCurry - thanks. But why do Michelin themselves recommend 285s on the rear then?
That Michelin recommendation is 285s for a C4 996 but 86 targa has a C4S which has the wider rear end, wider rear wheels ( I think) and hence wider rear tyres. What do michelin recommend for a C4S?

always use what is stamped on the plate that is fixed to your car, either in the door aperture or on the door itself.
Good point. I checked my rating plate (it's inside the fuel filler cap) just to make sure and it confirmed 225 and 285 for my car if 18" wheels. Phew! Having said this, that plate must be pretty general, as it has the wrong info for a C4 reference the spare wheel. On a C4 that's a deflated space saver due to the reduced room in the boot, but this is not mentioned on the plate. So you may still be right that 295s would actually be a better bet in matching the rotational speed of the two axles.

That's what I have on my 996 C4S. Incidentally, have you tried "blackcircles.com"?

Always found them a little cheaper than your average ATS...
