^^^^ I know Gaz.
We all like chewing the Pork fat but it should have been left after the end of the auction.
Some people don't like how the cars drive, I'd probably include myself amongst them, but the cars are cool old cars and the buyers for them obviously love them.

I think what was refreshing about the thread was initially a few of us thought "£30k! Ebay chancer!" But once John posted the full story explaining the details and the fact it was just a melted car cover, it turned into a rather interesting read.

Everytime you get a thread on a car that has rocketed you get the naysayers calling them ste. It's just a modern day P'heads thing. If the posters of said pointless views really weren't bothered about the price increases they'd just ignore the thread and move along.

Anyway, it was a good read and John has been nothing but transparent and also by adding in the bit of fun during the auction, it kept us amused and a modest donation went to charity.
Well done John. You definitely fall into the old skool P'header camp. Honest, good craic, and a huge Porsche fan. This forum used to be full of people like that.....

Anyway, I'm oot. I'll leave the naysayers to rip into 930s for a while. Keeps them busy. wink
John, great thread and thanks for making the charitable donations.

Olly I know people are just interested in how it sold for so much but that's just where the market is now at. I just don't think it really adds anything to the thread. It usually just descends into slating of the deal by people who have an axe to grind about values. Not meaning you, I'm just saying it'll now be another 3 pages of criticism. (Of the deal obviously, not the seller but it's still boring).

If people didn't have different opinions, most of us wouldn't bother entering internet chat forums!smile

Wow the new owner is pretty serious then, this is what happens when these cars become collectible and get bought by those with serious money. I don't think its possible these days to dip and rebuild a car for less than £15K, Porsche workshop money in the south east especially I bet will be multiples of that.
I think you would be looking at £15K for the dip and processing.

I think it would be around 400 hours of work to strip and re-build + all the parts + dipping, you would be lucky to get change from £30K to do it properly and probably double that.
The body shell prep for my race car included dip at Surface Processing in Dudley, etch primer, seam welding and sealing, 13point weld in cage and paint inside and out in a solid colour. Total cost was under £5K, the welding alone was 50 hours. We elected to do the rebuild into a complete car ourselves but later EMC Motorsport told me they would have done all that as a complete prep package for about £15K. The total hours we ended up at was a lot more than 400 in the end. Frankly anyone paying over £30K is being reamed hard but I am sure there are plenty in this position, its a crazy world classic cars and a nice business to be in for those who have rich collectors as customers.

Hi Marky911,
Congrats on the purchase of the new Pork everyone's been viewing this week and reading about with interest. I believe I read earlier somewhere, it would be great if you could make a thread on the restoration - work your carrying out on the car. I'm sure you would have a lot of very interested people following you through the next part of the journey, would make a great write up if you have the time and would love to see it at some car shows in the future. The famous 930..
Good luck with latest project, something to keep you occupied for the summer aye : - )

Hi Stu, I only won Johns little competition to guess what it would sell for. hehe
So far the new owner doesn't appear to be on here. He'll hopefully pop on one day though with a restoration thread.

I have a Mk1 GT3 like yourself. smile

Edited to add that I actually asked a mate of mine about the red 930 I mentioned on page one as was contemplating doing a swap, but it turns out he did actually let it go. Our GT3s sound and drive better but boy those 930s look fantastic eh.

Well, just to tie up the loose ends on this thread, the new owner collected the car last tuesday and took it back to its new home in Derby. Hopefully he will come in here and let people know how his restoration goes.

The cat-d was not for the heat damage, it was dating back to about 1998 when it had a minor oops moment with a front wing and back corner, mostly cosmetic damage, but the owner refused (by all accounts) to let Direct Line fix it in their bodyshop next to ford fiestas and the like.. So the insurance company put it on a cat D "Economic repair but uninspected".. the new owner has the photos in the paperwork for the car.

Was a bit of a bummer, but I did try to make that clear.

Still got some more of my personal Porsche collection to thin down, mostly up together great examples, but there are a couple of projects which I need to get rid of.. But nothing as controversial as this 930, especially on expected price.

The only car I am at a total loss to know what to do with is a 2.5 Boxster who's owner sold it to me about 4 years ago because his wife (now ex) decided to wash it with a brillo pad!!

Not worth enough to repaint, too small an engine to race in the Boxster series and less powerful than my customers Boxsters so the lack of power would make us seem bad if we painted it and offered it as a courtesy car... At the same time... Far too good a car to break up..

So, the Boxster is probably destined for a mad scientist project..

Anyway, thanks for the support, it certainly was entertaining starting the 930 at a pound, but it was the only way to work out what it was worth and get rid of it all in one go..

For the sake of the history books, I have changed the classified ad on pistonheads to have its ending price, and will be setting a marker as "SOLD" in the morning.

Hi everyone.

Not sure if you are all still on here or indeed interested but I have just bought this car from the buyer that purchased it in 2014 from JMG.
The previous owner stripped the car and started to rebuild it.

He is an aircraft engineer and the work he has done so far is top class. He had repainted the underside and rebuilt the suspension and steering.

He realised that it wasn't going to get finished soon and with a bit of uncertainty about his future employment he decided to sell.

I have loads of pictures if people are interested in the progress?

I contacted JMG today and hopefully I can speak to John about this car although after reading the thread I think he has explained most things.

This is how I bought it. He had completely stripped it and done a fantastic job of labelling everything and boxing it all.
We have had it in our body shop where we stripped back to metal a previous repair to the rear wing and repaired it again. The shell has now been painted inside and out. Callipers sent off for stripping and rebuilding. All the black anodised window surrounds and frames with the platers.
The best thing is that I had a great conversation with John on Friday evening who was the previous owner that sold it after the damage. He knows the car really well and can help with the engine set up as it’s running approx 425bhp using a 9xx hybrid turbo and a lot of other special equipment that his company installed.
Once I manage to sort out how to get the pictures off my phone and onto my computer I will post a lot more
