Are 996tt's as reliable as 993tt's
Discussion
I’ve owned 2x 993s C2s, 1x996c2 (for 5years) and since Feb my 2000 996TT. All have been very reliable.
The internal engine problems that you mention are what? The common one for 996 that I know of is the RMS (Rear Main Seal) on the crank shaft. The 996TT has the 964 crank so this problem is a lot less common on the TTs.
Do a search on PHs for RMS for further details on the RMS issue.
Anyone else got any input?

As said the 996 TT doesn't suffer the RMS problem seen on the naturally aspirated 996 engines. I think the only big problem the turbo suffered was some (early) engines having porous blocks...all fixed under warranty IFAIK.
993 cars were recalled for possible a wiring loom fault, all fixed under warranty again.

I don't think there is any difference in reliability between the two cars, just a different driving experience consistent with the 5 year gap in their development.
The general consensus is that the 993 is more raw and engaging, and the 996 more refined though dynamically more capable...and safer with the PSM system.
Both are toppo cars, you should try both and then decide. Just make sure what ever you buy comes with a good warranty for piece of mind.
Hope that helps.

Thanks guy's I'm currently looking for a 993tt at the moment,I've been to see a few cars My buget is £40k max.I can buy a really nice lhd for that money easily,or a 60k+ miles for a rhd.I'm leaning towards a rhd even though I'll have to buy a car with more mile/age etc. I had a look at the polar silver at Autobahn, but that went the next day,I also went to see a red one that was advertised in Autotrader/top marques but it seems like it's had a rear quarter. The welds at the top by the engine lid were not original factory hence the price £35k apart from that very nice car drove lovely! what are you guy's views?
the 996TT is bulletproof - it has the same basic GT1 derived engine as the GT3 and GT2, which means it doesn't suffer the same problems of RMS and porous blocks as the standard 996 engine.
This engine costs £28K to replace as opposed to £8K for a standard 996 engine, so that alone should tell you a bit about how it was constructed.
But, also remember the 996 is a lot more modern car than the 993 and has more electrics etc to go wrong over time...but thats the case on all modern cars.

There was a post recently by Ultra Viole with a 965 3.3 that had been fettled to 400+ gg's and it was pointed out that it's a much stronger engine because the 993 turbo is made from monkey metal or something.
I think someone's been pulling your plonker
As in spanking his monkey then?
Dunno what this monkey metal business is about - have been trying to think of steel alloys that might sound like 'monkey', but to little avail! Molybdenum-Nickel-Chrome alloy steel bottom end or something? Nah, I think it must be joke!
Hi wini, I'm no expert as I only have the one 993TT, but I'd find the car that you love the most, that means the colour you prefer, not the one everyone else wants because if something goes pop you'll need to love it to stomach the bill!
If you're thinking about re-sale values before you've purchased it you might want to reconsider the idea!
Find the best car you can find, and then keep everything crossed as the cheapest car could turn out to be the most expensive and the most expensive the cheapest in the long run.
If you're around bedford on the 11th Dec i'd be happy to take you for a 'spin' in one!

A lot of people advise to buy a car on condition rather than colour but I think to get the best of the car you need to get to your spec as much as possible. The problem with the 993tt is that there are so few around that getting the colour and condition that you want are limited unless you are prepared to wait.
When I got mine I wanted iris blue and waited a good 6 months until the right car came along.
