Think it looks fantastic - had a good look at Porsche Park Lane last week & have to say that the 997 C2 Cab is going to have to be really really good to better the Boxster S, esp as it will be much cheaper.
Having a look around it, it seemed that the Boxster has lost its "poor relation" tag of the 911. I am not surprised that the new one is taking sales away from the 997, If I had a 997 Cab (standard or S) on order, I would seriously think about the Boxster instead.

Very nice, but I wish they could do something a bit more exciting with the interior which still does not look as good as the original design exercise of nearly a decage ago. Would look better as a stripped out "GT3" look, or something along the lines of what Stola did.

Interesting how so many are praising the new Boxster.

Its lovely. But its barely any different to the previous Boxster! I'm sure its a better drive, more powerful, safer and can corner harder and so on - but we're talking an increase in bhp of just a few percent, an interior that isn't to everyone's taste but high quality, OK and PASM - a technological advance no doubt.

All I can say is that if this new model causes heavy depreciation of the 986 Boxster S then

the 986 is about to be a stunning used bargain.

They haven't done enough for me to part with my hard earned and have the cost of change just yet...

Don,

If it aint broke..........

Just make it even better !!!

I agree changes may be minimal in most areas, but, the thing was so damn good in the 1st place, all they could do is just improve it.

What would you pay used Boxster S - 2001's are now sub 25, 2003 models available in the low 30's. Is it the new model depressing prices or more the time of year? Make do with an older model for now and pick up a new (used)Boxster when it's lost the worst of it's money later i say ;-)

Anyone know when a car ordered now would be likely to be delivered?

Well in that case, it's also missing unreliability, loose door handles, electrical problems, and lack of trips to the dealer for warranty work !!!

But you get what you pay for !!!

Not sure that we're on firm ground here given the number of engine failures that Porsche have refused to acknowledge!!...and I'm a porker fan

Agree, the RMS issue has been chink in Porsches armour IMHO.

But i can only speak from experience, I owned a Boxster S a couple of years ago, the RMS started weeping within the 1st year of ownership, but after a swift trip to my OPC all was sorted FOC.

Other than that, i think the car will go down as my best all rounder ever (and i've had a few now)

But this is just my view

I've driven a 98s Boxster with the 2.5 lump & a later 3.2s. They're both nice cars & a great ownership preposition BUT they aren't exciting.
To say that the new car is better than the S2000 & 350Z is fine BUT the Boxster will cost more money, so it should be better.
Has anyone read EVO in recent months - the S that they have had on test has been about as reliable as, well.... an old TVR.
For £30k - £40k, why would you not buy a pre-owned 911?

CJN,

In answer to your question:

1.running costs
2.insurance costs
3.996 depreciation (for the foreseeable anyway)
4.newer car
5.better handling (than 996 cab)
6.warranty.

By the way, i don't work for Porsche !

I prefer the look of the Facelift 3.2S.

The line of the bonnet edges working against the profile of the front wings is lovely.

When I first saw the straight edges of the new Boxster bonnet and the droopy headlights, I thought MR2 ....

The interior looks more Audi TT than Porker, --- but I do think the spec of the new 2.7 model is now good enough in standard trim to beguile otherwise Z4 buyers.

Maybe it will grow on me, but it's just made the 997 front end redesign look positively inviting !

I drove an early 2.5 Boxster several years ago. I certainly don't doubt that it handles extremely well. Competence isn't the problem. Let's just say that "not exciting" is an understatement. I found it to be incredibly boring to drive on the street, so I relayed my experience to my brother-in-law. He thought I was insane, until he got to drive a Boxster a few years later and said the same thing... and the one he drove was a Boxster S.

Having had a 944 that I loved some years back, I was truly surprised. I was also surprised that, while most magazines which test the Boxster talk about how wonderful its handling is but never say anything about that. I only remember one car magazine--an Brit car magazine--that praised the Boxster's capabilities but also said that no one involved in the testing of the car wanted one.

Suffice it to say that if a car is strictly for the street, to me the most important quality it can have is that it be fun to drive. Many cars are faster, quicker, and some can handle better than my 2001 MX5, but I have found practically no cars that are as much fun to drive.

I will never understand how or why some people think the Boxster (S) is boring.

I have come to a conclusion that I think must be the case, though.

That is: Its nothing to do with the car. Its so competent. Its so complete that there is nothing to criticise - and so the car could be viewed as "boring" as there is no quirk of engineering, failure in design or other minor development mishap to give the car "character".

All I can say is that I, for one, am ready to appreciate its completeness for itself. I do believe that a Boxster isn't the sort of car that endears itself to you immediately - its a slow burn kind of experience.

And finally: I regularly track mine and I can tell you its not boring. Oh no. Not even slightly. Sure, my friends with GT3s go by, but there are a whole lot of cars I pass too.

Give me one with 450bhp and it will be perfect!

Agree completely with you Don. It's so complete. I got my S after an S2 Elise and the S feels like the Elise's grown up elder brother. It does everything the Elise does and does it as well if not better. Key points are;
1. 3.2 flat six - what a noise as it winds up past 4,000rpm. Superb.
2. Braking - power, feel and stability - excellent
3. Chassis - feels great. yes it's alot heavier in feel than the Elise but with the Elise I always felt when pressing on that if I got to the edge it was 100% grip and then 0% grip with very little warning. The S communicates the edge better and break away is a more gentle transition.

For me the only down side is that the steering is not quite as communicative in your hands but then the S is a heavier car so I don't expect it to have the sensitivity of the Elise.

For me it's the best overall car I have every had. Superbly competent all rouder and has the opportunity to put a grin on my face every drive.

The only reason I'll change mine is to get one with a glass rear screen.

My only wish was if Porsche had done a more GT3 version, less carpet and sound deadening, lighter seats, option of manual roof rather than having all the electrics. Just saving a bit of weight could improve the recipe even further. No need to mess with the engine too much as it's plenty torquey already IMHO, just a small tweak here and there would be plenty.

People may take the p**s, their loss I think.

I read in Wheels magazine (yeah, I'm in Australia, so what, they have foriegn editors - Georg Karcher who works for CAR) that it was a little too competent as a car - they tested the new Boxter in germany with the optional 19's and said their was too much grip, although otherwise it was great.

I have a 01 Boxster S and drove the new S Saturday, and it really is that much better! I went from and Elise to Boxster S and felt it lacked something but was a good alrounder. However following the drive in the New Boxster S with sport pack, it is another thing! Best car Ive ever driven on the road... certainly better than a 996 to drive, if I could have afforded it I would have put my money down the second I got out of the test drive!

Supposedly you can have delivery around Easter, but dealers seem to have some ready to go ones in their showrooms.
