Does anyone know if it's possible/legal for a private individual to rent out their car, in my case, a 993 C2 manual coupe, fully serviced and currently sitting in storage. I'd rather rent it than have to sell it.

Many thanks. Kim

Nothing stopping you renting it so long as you pay any taxes on profits and the insurance allows it. I suspect the latter will be a problem under your current policy.

Thanks for the reply. Could the renter not provide fully-comp insurance themselves? I was thinking long-term rental rather than the odd week here and there.

I'd imagine you can sort the insurance out one way or another.

Must be possible since there is an ad campaign running on LBC for some sort of car investment scheme which sounds like an automotive buy to let. Genuine or not I have no idea.

I know someone who has rented a 1990's Mercedes SL for June,July and August for the last 2 years. He pays around £1,000 per month and he loves the hassle free approach to driving a classic sports car.

Is that through a Classic Hire company do you know or a private owner?

A mate of mine "hired out" his GT3 with ecurie (I think) car club I think it was.

He was happy with the arrangement and it meant he got to drive a range of cool cars for the price of having one.

No. I think that he just approached a SL specialist and offered them the idea.

It is a really interesting idea. Are you thinking about rental terms of weeks, months or years? How would you charge?

After making a few enquiries, I'll be renting it out through a Classic Car Hire company rather than doing it myself. About £500 per weekend with limited mileage is about the going rate.

I was given the number of a specialist Porsche 911 Hire Company from a colleague on 911UK (thanks Tim) and that's who I've now teamed up with.

They are www.porsche911hire.co.uk and I found them extremely friendly and helpful.

I shall be renting my 993 out through them for the foreseeable future and if any of you are interested in finding out what the air-cooled magic/witchcraft is all about you should give Chris Miles a ring on 07914 74 74 78, and you never know, you may end up in my car!

They also have a 996 Turbo and 996 C4S for hire as well.

An interesting idea for sure scratchchin

There isnt much prestige car availability over here in NI, and have often considered this. Does it mean that expenses such as servicing/tyres are deductible?

A couple of weeks ago, a neighbour was telling me he'd been chatting to a guy in Reading who runs one of these businesses - apparently, he started out just by hiring his own 911 out (change of career from being a London City boy when a heart attack hit him) and the business built up from there. Don't think it was this place, because his stock apparently included an older 911 (1970s era I think) - and that was the one which was fairly solidly booked.

I was told his annual insurance was £14,000 a year.
