Hi chaps,

I miss the noise my old 996 C4S used to make with the PSE option. I was thinking of doing the Gundo hack on my much more silent 996 C4 and wondered if anybody else on here had done it.

If so what do you think to the results? I'm not looking for any performance gains, I just miss the noise that I know the flat six is capable of producing.

I've been speaking with a highly regarded mobile exhaust man who's main focus is opening up the exhausts on the BMW M3 V8's, and he has convinced me that the Gundo option will give me something close to what I had before. I'm guessing it's never going to sound exactly the same, but for the money he's asking if it gives me even 70% of the noise it will be money well spent.

I've provisionally booked it in for Thursday, what do you think people? Worth doing or just leave it?

Regards

Not certain on the final cost yet as we are going to look at options of removal.

I know some companies suggest the quickest and easiest way is to cut all the clamps etc and just replace them subject to rust etc, so we are going to take a look.

I believe it is going to be MIG welded. I know nothing of the difference between the two. Is there something I should know? Is one better than the other?

How much roughly is he asking? You must know a ballpark if you've already decided it's good value and you've provisionally booked it in...

No reason why a C4 can't be made to sound as good as a PSE'd C4S I believe, and I'm waqtching this thread with interest.
Can you do a before/after vid?

Ball park is around 200-250 depending on whether or not we have to chop clamps and bolts. I will take plenty of before and after videos.

I've bitten the bullet and it's being done tomorrow afternoon.

Ouch..!
Shame you didn't get my message..!
We could have done the bypass pipe mod, TIG welded, for around £60 and you fit them.
We don't have the facilities to work on road cars, so couldn't remove & refit

Ianan, you are not really comparing eggs with eggs there. By all accounts he quoted me a price of £40 if I had presented him with the mufflers ready for cutting and welding.

To be fair from what I have just witnessed, it's a fair bit of effort to get the mufflers off. It's a fairly straight forward process, but the clamps and whatnot are quite rusty.

Good news is he got both mufflers off without having to grind or drill anything, very pleased with his progress so far.

I think it's going to take around 3-4 hours in it's entirety, in which case if it comes in at around the £250 mark all in I will be very happy.

I had to start the car with the mufflers off and give it a little rev, oh my god what a noise! Sounds like an old school American V8 on tickover! I took a video, but it doesn't really do it justice.

Just waiting for him to finish the welds and have it popped back on.

Don't get me wrong...I was far from touting for business.
It was just an offer to a local Porsche owner.
Hope it is all you hope for

Hi,

I'm the one who did the mod on the OP car... he was very pleased with the mod but I never got video, however
I've just completed one today on a 997, which sounded awesome and I have a before and after video comparison, the customer again went away very happy, I don't do anything special, just follow the gundo/PSE style, bolts shearing off which happened today are common place and some very tough bolts, but nothing that can't be remedied.

the car

the hack

replaced bolts that sheared off

That is a serious crack on the right side of the inlet pipe.
Did you repair that too ?

Can this mod be done on the car, or does the system need to be removed?

To cut two holes and weld new pipes in place, are you serious?
