maybe a 993...fit a ducktail and fuchs type wheels and you capture some of the look...someone on here did that with a nice grey one
This may be the car you're thinking of. All the creature comforts, bomb-proof engine, appreciating by the month and under £30k.

(Not mine btw!)

Would you really sell a car like that, just because you don't use it enough?

I did something similar in that I went from a fast car that handled well to a 3.2 cab. Good ones do not come along too often as I discovered after 2 years searching. In the end I bought a low mileage rust and damage free car in good mechanical order and restored it to "investment grade" condition, and a thoroughly enjoyable journey it has been.

I think in making the decision to go back in time one needs to be clear on the objective. I was not looking for a high speed track focused replacement rather something that would take me in comfort to the seaside on a sunny day or to pootle out for sunday lunch somewhere in the country.

I wanted something that did not have a dashboard full of warning lights and maintenance requiring the use of a computer and the latest sw from that particular supplier. Above all I wanted to be able to park it and it still be there unscratched when I got back.

Oh and mrs 49 wanted comfy seat and be able to see out of the windows.

I do not expect the finished car to be anything other than nice to look at and enjoyable to drive.

"Investment Grade Condition" presumably means 'Factory Original'?

No not at all, it is a phrase I picked up from an auction house somewhere which made me smile so I thought I would use it.

Factory original or whatever is concours, show condition is fabulous but not original (the wrong screw used to attach X to Y) so I take "investment grade" to be auctioneer talk to boost the interest in a specific car which is neither concours, or show but is still quite nice.

"Investment Grade" does sound like auctioneer/estate agent speak rolleyes

In reality it means a car that is likely to have significant future market desirability - and the safest guess would be 'unmolested originality'.

Still flip-flopping between keeping the GTS or going old school. Have seen an unmolested 3.2 Carrera for sale with G.50 gearbox. As someone with dangerously little knowledge is this a reasonable car to discover air cooled Porsches with?

No need to spend anything like £55K to experience a true classic air-cooled 911. Look no further than the humble 3.0 SC for the best value proper old-school 911. But make sure you get a good one - most are rusty old dogs in disguise. A £25K budget should put you in the very best examples around. I prefer them to the later 3.2 Carrera as they are a bit lighter and more driver focused. Also more reliable and better suited to long haul drives than the earlier cars, but slightly less exciting for a quick blast. I've had the pleasure of owning most generations of the 911 and the SC is definitely one of the best, despite its low rent reputation.

Thanks all for the replies. drmark you obviously have experience in spades and I take your point about my budget not stretching to the earlier cars. Are you suggesting it might not be the best idea to go back to a 964? Is it better to take off the rose tinted specs and stick with the GTS, which to be fair is not exactly dull.
Sorry - been away. The very early cars are fab - deft, light and full of character (but very expensive). I loved the 3.2 when I had one in the eighties but going back was an error after driving modern 911s. I was trying to say that the 964 is a good halfway house.

I can relate to that with both a 997.2 and an early 80's 911 in the garage. The older car is a bit agricultural and slow in comparison to say the least. But despite all this, it's still a lot of fun to drive! Steering feel is great, narrow body is nimble on country roads, ride quality is excellent, brakes have good feel, engine note is great, sports seats are brilliant. Only thing that lets it down is the slow, clunky gearshift, especially by modern standards. Heating and ventilation system is pants too!

This is all most helpful, thanks.

This 1987 Carrera 3.2 I've found has had two owners, the last for 25 years and the first a lady. It is completely original as it left the factory and has all keys, docs etc. Apparently it is un-marked, never damaged, smoked in or tracked. However it has done 189k miles which seems a daunting amount, though it did have an engine top end re-build 12,000 miles ago. The original clutch lasted 162k miles. The owner is asking £30k. Would be grateful for an opinion from you guys who know about these things...

THIRTY grand for a yellow and brown '87 that has done 189k? Er, not good value IMHO.
