The Porsche Bubble Explodes - 'PEAK BEARD'
Discussion
To the credit of the old stuff, and the debit of the new stuff, the pre-gen2 non GT water cooled cars are now the ultimate speculation.
Why ?
Because if an air cooled engine makes a nasty noise, the chances are that it's worth repairing and looking after.
Were this to happen to a pre-gen2 non GT water cooled car, whatever you have spent on it may well be money down the drain. And many bought them because they were cheap ...
The old stuff if well maintained is motoring history, and lovely. Nobody is forced to buy an RS ...

I wouldn't be so sure. From what I read on here a proper rebuild of an air-cooled engine can be 5 figures. Along with the usual age related wear and rust, they are not (and have never been) cheap cars to own long term.
yes proper rebuild on say a 964 can be anywhere between £20k and £30k depending on who does the rebuild. Lots of tat out there for £30k which could need another £20k-£30k spent if the engine needs a refresh. pete a said:
£250k? Thats not even funny. £150k would be speculative. This does not reflect well on JZM in my view.pete a said:

How much higher do JZM think it's going to go?!IknowJoseph said:

How much higher do JZM think it's going to go?!The point of this post being that a 993 Turbo S could for big money in the future (maybe quite a while into the future) based on the number produced only - hence the term 'speculation'

Can you seriously pay between £20-30k for an engine rebuild on a 964?!
I had the top end done on my 930 with a new clutch in 2009 admittedly at a subsidised rate for £7k (I imagine it would have been closer to £10,000 unsubsidised) - £30,000 seems a lot even if you take apart the bottom of the engine?

Wait to the winter comes.
I think there will be some upset owners who have bought at these silly inflated prices who will lose their shirts when the inevitable happens.
God I know its one of 29 cars but its just a 993 turbo which in S guise does not drive as well as a normal turbo on our roads. If someone pays £250k for that they are utterly utterly mad. I could have bought one of these for £80k and walked away thinking it wasn't worth the money after a drive. I think there will be some upset owners who have bought at these silly inflated prices who will lose their shirts when the inevitable happens.

Again - how many were made? I know you cannot truely compare, but how many 993 turbo S' were made vs say 2.7 RS'? We've all seen the value of those go through the roof. I cannot remember the price off the top of my head, but the flyer for SCoM handed out at the Yorks show had a RS Lightweight at something above (I think) £750k.
They (SCoM) actually have one 2.7RS at around the £750k mark but they also have another for which they are asking the princely sum of.....wait for it....£1.1 million!!Personally, I don't think the there'll be too much pain.
Yes, there's some silly pricing, but, the top end collectors can afford to indulge. And the 'enthusiast' market - some pre-impacts, 3.2s,964s, 993s, GT3s, 964RSs, etc - ie the sub-£100k sector - this should have a fairly robust supply and demand chain.
It's just the crazy prices for relatively unimportant stuff that will probably see the biggest correction. And, if someone has been silly enough to re-mortgage their house to make the 'wrong' buying decision, then yes that might hurt.
