Clive

Still progressing nicely.

Are you going to triangulate the point that the front engine mounting plate attaches to the box, with the side members?
No doubt the space in front of the engine plate is for the fuel tank, so is there room for the triangulation beams?

I would love to be progressing with my RR chassis but have too many other things on yet.

Have to come here for a build 'fix'.

Not sure exactly where your talking bud ? Apart from the 6 tubes that I'm working on right now, that connect the wide ally plate back to the bulkhead in front of the engine structurally that's about it on the tub. Have to reinstate the diagonal brave in the roll hoop ( rhd to lhd ) but that's about it. Everything else will be sacrificial on the outriggers etc no real added structure.

The quality of this build never ceases to amaze me. Dull question; the blank ally slabs must cost an absolute fortune, and you remove, what, 80% of the material as scrap? Can you sell the swarf?

The Bars I'm building now should take most of the twisting loads, and the engine should be more of a vertical plain loading. The push pull loading (that would be closer to the bars you drew) should also be taken mainly by the outer bars.... Once the all in it will be allot clearer bud..

I thought so until I took the first 16 x 20liter buckets of the stuff to be weighed in, only got $0.25 a pound, almost not worth me taking the time to go into town to do it.... If i could find a guy with a oven to met it back down it would be worth just making something from it....

would love to know how you made the 10° fish mouth on those tube junctions at the transaxle mounting plate

Right tool for the right job bud wink Baileigh TN250 with offset cutting to get those long notches. You have to cut out the scrap as you go but way faster than grinding it out by hand....

It's just amazing seeing this come together. thumbup

Do you go so far as calculating/estimating the torsional rigidity of this rear chassis setup, perhaps comparing to an original car's (if the data is even available)?

As a layman, I was struck when looking at photos of 962's rear chassis, thinking that a few bars off the main chassis seemed very minimal given the forces that the rear of the car must generate in every direction!

It's a shame PH doesn't show the number of thread views as I imagine this one would be high.

I'm sure there are plenty like me that have no knowledge of the skills being used but none the less keep checking the status and salivating at the photos and expectation for the final car!

Not sure exactly what the original was but there where allot of differences to all the cars. Some had the thin Ally tub with a Ally rollcage (956 Le Mans spec) the Imsa cars mandated a Steel roll cage as well as the longer Wheel base (ie the 962), and there where a few None Porsche Built cars with a Carbon Tub copying the the Ally tub but only in outer shape... So I bet they varied allot. No I haven't done any virtual Torsion testing but its going to be plenty...

Food for thought ...

I agree this must be one of the most viewed threads on here. I quite like the fact the for the most part posters actually have something interesting to say rather than just add a bow to get their post count up.
A like button could be the answer.....

4 bars in 2 more to do. The dry sump tank is in the way for one of them so that's got to come out now and be modified....
