I'm looking for a car for a 60 mile daily commute, and one thought is a 996 C2.

I've got a 997.2 PDK (which I don't want to commute in) and it'll do mid-30s MPG on a dual carriageway run, which is what my commute will be.

What would a 996 do? It'd be a manual. Also, is there any difference in economy between the Gen1 and Gen2 models?

I appreciate you don't necessarily buy a 911 for economy, but it'd be good to know what to expect.

My 3.6 c4s will average around 30 mpg on a motorway run, driving at 65 - 85 mph.

I don't know if there's a difference in economy between .1 and .2 models.

My 996.1 C2 did an average of 30 MPG. That was with hardly any short journeys and almost no driving in traffic or in town.

It'll be much cheaper to use your 997 to commute in - sure, the higher number on the dash will cause greater depreciation when you come to change it, but not to the tune of the cost to run another 911 (especially with the engine risks etc).

Different engine sizes (3.4 vs 3.6) so I'd be surprised if there wasn't a difference. Whether that difference is significant or not is another question...

Yep, use the 997 and enjoy it.

Interesting to see that 996 was considered as a beater.

I commuted with my C2 3.4 Manual for 2 years, 100 miles per day.

90% motorway, no traffic. The long term average MPG (from the onboard computer) was 33.3MPG. In reality it's probably lower, but not by much.

I know it's perhaps not very sensible to do a long commute in a 911, but if one has to do a long commute, it might as well be in a nice car, enjoying the journey. It made my day a little bit better.

Thinking of doing this in a whatever tdi would be equivalent to give up on life.

Also 0% depreciation on my 911 and low running cost more than offset the financials against a newer diesel.

Thanks all.

Sounds like it's a viable commuter car then. All it really needed was to beat the 23mpg I'm getting from my diesel X5!

I could use the 997, but it gets enough use already without adding another 15k p.a. to it. I also have the opportunity to consolidate the fleet a bit, and adding a 996 would be a decent replacement for a couple of outgoing cars in the "do everything" stakes.

I did end up bringing the 997 this morning. All thoughts of economy figures went out the window when a dual carriageway presented an MP4-12C and no other traffic hehe
