I feel sorry for those who have bought a new boxster or cayman when Im pretty sure everyone they come across say "oh... you got a boxster/cayman?! - not a 911 is it". That would get up my nose as its just ignorance from those who think they know something about Porsche cars... yes the older cayman and older boxsters wern't a patch on the 911's but the new boxster and cayman's are amazing. This stigma is pretty hard to shake off. I hear it all the time "good job you didnt go for the cayman or boxster then"... and shake my head thinking they have no idea about the new ones out. There that's my rant of the day sticking up for all the new cayman and boxster owners.

I love the "you cannot afford a 911 jibe"

but it's better when they think you own a "Cayenne" when you say Cayman

I drive the R as a daily and people just think it's a GT3, must have had about 8 or 9 people say "is that the GT3, must have cost you 100k"

the gen Public don't have a clue about cars.

lol - very true. Just out of curiosity... when they do stop you and say "is that the GT3, must have cost you 100k" - what do you say in response? lol

I guess if someone said to me "you cannot afford a 911"... I would say to them they cant afford a Porsche full stop smile

I have a 2010 997 Gen 2 with all the trimmings... yet the allure of a new cayman is still pretty strong.

My default response to "can't afford a 911" is "how's your 911 then ? ah... I see".

tbqh i prefer the cayman to the 911 and owned both. Each to their own.

I have had no mention of 911 since I picked up my Boxster S

Loads of positive comments about how it looks, the colour choice etc

To be fair the new range of these cars look and in many ways are so similar to each other - they should call it Gayameranne and the rest would be the endless list of options (incl engine location and convertbility). I'm sure the option fetishists would provide a renewed boost to Porsche profits wink

Hi Noel - I agree, new boxster especially S looks amazing... you've most probably come across those who are either too polite to have a dig... or like most of the general public dont know what it is other than it being a porsche. Agreed with last comment - they should be all called one thing with simply various options...

There was that one bloke though who said "is that the Cayman S only with the optional red pull straps for closing the doors" smile

I hate all the comparative stuff. The question for me is " Are you enjoying your car?". You can never really win at the comparative game either.

You get your McLaren P1 and someone says.".Oh. you like moderns then?...and steps into a 250GTOsmile.

When I was very young I had an old 3.8 Jag (and it was junky), when someone came up and said, "interesting matte finish".. and snorted.

We all have our p&j and best to enjoy it and not worry about some idiot who needs to prove some very dubious status over you.

Our local Porsche coffee group had a young student who came for years...big Porker fanatic. When he graduated, he had a beaten up VW, and a couple of years ago bought a 964 ( before prices went up). Can you image the satisfaction of your first Porsche that young?. I personally am happier when I see people enjoying any Porsche that a bunch of willy-wavers.

You bought what you bought for a reason so why worry about what other people think. Just enjoy it.

I think the one that irritates me the most, just because it's so misinformed is 'Is that a Cayenne?'

I've had both. The comments about the Boxster not being a 911 did really annoy me as it was sheer ignorance & jealosy
I prefer the 911 based mainly on looks and the sound which is a lot meaner

Well having owned both 911 and now the 981 Cayman S by choice I don't spend any time wishing I'd bought the 911.

Both cars are great, so enjoy what you got.

Also, the Cayman S is a quick car now.........in terms of 997's only those fitted with a power kit or those wearing a GT3 or Turbo badge are appreciably quicker. Not sure how the 991 Carreras compare.

Don't feel sorry for me. I stand by my decision. After testing a fews 997's I was a little undecided and then I test drove a Cayman S and my mind was made up. None of the 997's i tried felt as complete a sports car as the Cayman S did.

I've had one person say the poor man's Porsche comment, but no one has said anything about it not being a 911.

I don't really understand this subject. I wonder whether it is the owners who have this 'problem'.

Its badge snobbery and its stupid and vain. If you like your Boxster then enjoy it! Why waste your time considering other peoples views of your car choice?

Does a 360 Stradale owner feel bad when some fkwit asks why he didnt buy an Enzo?

It makes no sense.

Had a 986, which was my first Porsche. Loved it. Kept for 1 year. Exchanged for a 987. Still have. 3 years later. Love it. Just bought a 911 (996). Loving it. Both different handling, performance. But it is possible to love 2 different cars from the same marque.
Equally enjoyable is showing people the pictures of the other car! I always show my Saab & Mini before the other Porsche, depending on which one I am in.
Amazing Richards who don't know what I am driving. Ie. in Boxster. Is that the 911 cab? Dunderheads!
