Basically you “The Moderators” are wrong! And I’m going to explain why in some detail:-

To be honest I hate waste, time wasters, bureaucracy and politically correctness, I like efficient, straight to the point and people with a sense of humour.

So Crimp has been banned! What I ask have you actually achieved? Except P*SS a lot of people off, you have made this forum a duller place, it was already getting worse, overtaken by bullies.

Pistonheads is a Business, it makes money from people visiting the site, reading the stories, paying for car Ads and selling advertising space that we as “CUSTOMERS” click on PH gets 10pence a click or whatever way you have agreed to get money out of these companies.

We the “CUSTOMERS” keep you lot going and in jobs or hobbies, there have been a lot of changes made to Forum Structures that most people didn’t like and no one listened… or at least did anything about it.

I used to love the old PH Classifieds, just being able to click down the left hand column and expand interesting cars that were for sale, I hate the new structure, I now have mostly know what I’m looking for and so can’t just browse, it’s like going into a large department store and everything being locked in cupboards that have a label on the door and you actually now have to open every door you want to look in, go inside and then open more doors to actually see the merchandise. It doesn’t work nearly as well as the old system and personally I was disappointed with the change to the point where I no longer look at all.

On the subject of what is proper and I did actually see the image Crimpy posted and also thought it was very funny and apt at the time, but let’s clear up a few things that have been said by moderators in response to that picture and the subsequent banning.

I’m the IT Director of a successful company that’s been in business 25 years and had one of the staff come across this image whilst doing a bit of lunchtime browsing, let’s see what would have happened…. Errrrmmm absolutely NOTHING, and the reason NOTHING would have happened is because we are reasonable people, not jumped up politically correct time wasting idiots.

You only have to look at the Daily Mail Web site or any of the other daily rags online and they are full of half-naked people, do people get into trouble for looking at the Daily Mail at work from time to time….. again NO!

1. Yes It would have been a little unexpected the image though unless clicked on was tiny and would unlikely to have been seen by anyone else in particular around them and unlikely to cause offense and anyone with any common sense would have just come off the thread.

2. In terms of the opposite looking at this, are you also seriously trying to tell us that anyone women who is reading car threads doesn’t have a sense of humour?... feedback from any lovely lady members please!!

3) In terms of teens looking at that image, are you also seriously trying to tell us that any kid is going to be offended by this, I would think that any kid / teenager old enough to read PH Forums will have seen worse on their Phones, Tablet, PC, Laptop or TV. What do you think Teenagers do in their bedrooms, even with blocks and controls on, a lot of them appear to live on Snap Chat, what do you think they are sending pics of?
You only have to look at pre-watershed TV these days with Hollyoaks, there is stuff on there that I certainly don’t wan’t by kids watching and a lot of it should be post 10pm in my opinion, look at what goes off in Big Brother, truly amazing that they get away with some of what goes off there.

The bullying in that went on during the 991 GT3 threads by certain members and you know who you are and should be frankly ashamed of yourselves for your behaviour is / was frankly shocking, if someone spoke to me in real life like that I’d take their head off! You should conduct your selves with a little more dignity! I don’t seem to remember anyone being banned despite it going on for months and months, I actually found it very offensive and lowered my view of certain people on this board significantly to the point where I stopped reading the GT3 threads completely.
You only have to look at some of the language expressed by Chris Harris during some of his reviews, both written and videos, and whilst often it may be bleeped out, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out what is said or inferred, I’m pretty sure there are tens of thousands of kids and teens that watch these videos, should we ban all these articles too?

This whole debacle reminds me of the Ratners thing, where the CEO was on TV and P*ss*ed off his customers, people walk with their feet, don’t underestimate the power of the crowds and people, it may not happen overnight or even in the next week, or month but gradually there will be a slow but steady exodus from long standing members that are keen and passionate about their cars and provide valuable insight and advice to others on this forum.

“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the Moderators” and whilst there are a vocal few on this forum I suspect as always most people whilst may not be bothered to contribute would agree that Crimpy should not have been banned and it has left a nasty taste of PH Moderators in my mouth that is simply unacceptable.

The whole point of a Moderator is to be reasonable, sensible and reflect the views of most people and exercise common sense, and I think all moderators involved in this need to take a long hard look in the mirror and decide whether or not you are up to the job and reflect the views of the people, if you cannot do this simple task then I would politely suggest that you are in the wrong job.

All you had to do is delete the image / post or put a censored over it and tell him off.... AGAIN!

JOB DONE! Happy campers.

Instead this could cost PH in the long run and maybe there is room for another PH Clone that gives people just what they want.

Because it’s not this!!!!!!
So do you fancy being a Moderator? If yes good for you. If no then why? Oh your to busy? Can't be bothered? Not worth the aggro? Or some other reason?

Someone has to do it and I would say we as a collective owe them a vote of gratitude for doing their best in very difficult circumstances. Do they make mistakes? Probably but then they are only human.

Give them a break or talk with your feet, most won't because even with its faults this is still a great place for Porsche enthusiasts.

Or you may want to think you would do if despite the proper warnings a member of your staff stuck his/her finger up at you, what you would do having previously warned that person of the consequence of their actions?

I agree the bulling on here should be addressed if reported as such...

Budweiser, there are as many views one way as the other and you're right it has been a great site but risks disappearing up its own exhaust pipes.

Some people have reacted by telling others to go PM and/or email the PH Ivory Towers but that stops an open, clear and transparent discussion on the inconsistencies of the Moderators.

If a thread does not interest someone they can simply bypass and find a thread that does.

I am sure some would take up the challenge of being a Mod, but have you noticed no matter how many times it has been asked, no one from PH as clarified how to become one of the 'few'.

Finally, anyone that thinks PH is not a commercial enterprise is deluding themselves and perhaps it is time for Haymarket to spend on paid administrators / moderators ?

In response to your comments, Actually I wouldn’t mind being a moderator, however I work away a lot and would mostly be not around to “Moderate” so impossible, you don’t know my background or circumstances and I don’t know yours so do not judge me, given the time I could be bothered, and at least when confronted I would listen to people, I wouldn’t just close threads and topics because it felt a little uncomfortable and I messed up and didn’t want to hear the wrong stuff and I’d be big enough to swallow my pride if I had got it wrong,

I also have a life outside of PH, and I don’t like injustices – its not like he’s actually committed a crime, where as some of the comments made on hear to other people could probably have made for a slander or libel case.

Fully agree about it could be a contentious job and actually all I’ve suggested is that Moderators exercise common sense and listen to the PH Customers.

The people that work for me btw are very professional and when once in a blue moon I do need to chat to them I speak to them professionally as mature adults and reasonably about anything that needs to be handled - they are mature enough to understand that something needs to change, but we also work very closely as a team and we all get on. I don’t close them down and I try and exercise reason and good judgement, we look after our staff and don’t just hire a fire like some, most of the people that work for me have been working with me or for me for more than 12 years with very little staff loss in that time and many additional new hires.

Treat others with the same respect that you would wish to be treated!

BTW, why don't you consider applying to become a moderator yourself?

I wouldn't do it for all the tea in China. Judge you, not me. I think it is you that is making judgements and assumptions regarding Mod actions when few of us know both sides of the storey. My challenge to you about your staff wasn't, as you well know, actually meant that way. Was more of a a what if they etc. conveniently sided step I may say?

So what if? Would you take decisive albeit fair action against them or let them off with another cosy chat?

I would suggest you apply the same curtesy to the Mods as you say you do to your staff (good for you on that one). Remember there are two sides to every storey and accept the Mods do a great job under extremely difficult conditions.

Just my opinion ....

Some interesting comments re the commercial position of pistonheads through advertising etc - I've actually bought eleven cars via the pistonheads classified - seven of them were/are 911's - two of those 911's were bought from a guy in the Rotherham/Sheffield area who posted on here under the name "Crimp a Length " - so the reverse position of Ed's posting is he brought commercial business/income to the site that's banned him ! - I'm sure he's advertised far more cars on here than the two I've bought from him and doubtless introduced other people to the site who in turn will have introduced others which in turn brought more business and income to the site etc etc etc - much as good news travels fast we live in a world where bad news travels faster and I'm sure the ripples than occur as a result of Ed's ban will travel far and wide . Was I offended by the photograph Ed posted ? not in a million years in fact I found it quite amusing as I'm sure 99.9% of other sensible like minded adults who are members of this forum did - I left school more years ago than I care to remember and felt that at that point my being treated like a child with regard to what I could and couldn't look at had ceased - evidently this is not the case and pistonheads now takes on the position of (almost) parental guidance - when we are all , in fact old enough to (seemingly) make up our own minds - or perhaps not ? I appreciate a line has to be drawn somewhere - in this case I feel it's certainly been drawn in the wrong place and the action of banning Ed is a complete over reaction to something I'm sure was intended purely for the amusement of others - does this leave me feeling warm towards the pistonheads site - most definately not - will it alter my regularity of visit - yes I think it will - my days of being treated like a juvenile and being restricted in my viewing content had, ( I thought) ended some time ago - evidently not - lighten up for gods sake - one of my secretaries is 17 - I've seen far worse on the jokes on her phone she shows to my other staff !

Perhaps it's time for a commercial offshoot with "Bring back Crimp" T-Shirts - for those old enough to remember - a variant on the "George Davis is innocent " theme of some years ago !

I understand it is a commercial enterprise and agree with some of your points. If the owners screw it up that's their problem. I'm sure we could all find another forum if forced to do so.

It is so easy to snipe at the Mods who I believe do their best within the constraints they have put on them.

We can agree to differ and move on? Best..etc

And best kept to yourself!

I'm not known for my patience btw! and I don't remember mentioning a "cosy" chat I think it was more along the lines of respectful and professional, not everyone needs to shout and ball at staff, people have no respect for that type of person, I'll tell now though from experience that anyone and I mean anyone that that has ever tried to speak to me in any such fashion has come off much worse!

So please go and bother someone else as I'm truly not interested in your personal attacks, and this is exactly the type of comments that this place needs like a hole in the head. And why your types of forum comment have turned people off to PH.

I don't understand why you are picking an argument and putting words into my mouth??? very odd behaviour IMHO!

Great post and right on the money top bloke, ive met him at a show a few years ago when he had the lovely 930. I guess if you've had 2 cars from the guy you'll know the true person he is then not some plonker who just posts rubbish for the fun of it.

Love the T Shirt idea

I have to be careful now as i have just been let out of the Sin Bin after a chat with the mods, i have suggested they let the guy back on so we'll have to see where it progresses

As I said I first met Ed through this site when I bought his 993 C4S from him - kept in touch via the occasional e-mail and subsequently bought his red 3.2 Carrera from him last July - Top cars and a top guy - a true enthusiast who I feel contributed some interesting (and amusing ) posts to this site.

goldsbd,

your 12:28 post said it all. really.

The dreadful "political correctness" / "jobs worth " mentality gives me cause to celebrate (yet again ) that I left the UK 22 years ago.

Pathetic effort to censor material generally intended for an adult (I.E. a brain & a sense of humour ) audience, who, lets be honest, probably have a less intimate knowledge of porn/tinder or any other "perversions" you care to name than any teenager who happened upon this site.

As to the "what if someone opened the image at work" ? do any of you decision makers actually use the internet ? I lose count of how many times a (relatively ) innocent website results in me having a wholly pleasing, if somewhat politically incorrect, image appearing in front of me.

If someone is in a position where someone else is constantly allowed to look over their shoulder during their entire working day, they deserve to A - be sacked & B-be subsequently taken out the back & given a good kicking to enable them to "get a life"

This whole sad episode is so totally PCUK that I fall into joyous celebration of my decision 22 years ago to fk off !

For Gawd sake . . . GET A LIFE & stop letting this site be dictated to by characterless suits.

Edited to say, whilst I was typing Birdcage gave me the perfect example of "the sad little Englishman" that makes the imposition of this pathetic attitude so easy . . . well done "Mate" (as you English like to call each other, although I fail to see any mateyness from such as you )
