Of course with 20,000 (wild guess!) Panameras sold and over 100,000 997 Gen 1s sold, it made sense to sort out the N-rating for the PSS on the Panamera first...

I really hope Porsche and Michelin are still banging their heads together on the 997 PSS N-rating. With only the earliest 997s now ineligible for Porsche extended warranty, how does the goldmine of 997s all needing new boots, not make the PSS N-rating a commercial priority? Madness.

Come on Porsche & Michelin, my PS2s are down to 4 and 5mm and I want PSSs next!

glad they did smile

the PSS are on - and first impressions are really good;
still in the break in period, but they appear to have mega grip over the previous Pzeros
they seem quite happy with over 600hp pushing them in the dry- not had enough dampness to try them on yet
looking forward to having some fun with these smile

You might want to check your sales figures - they have sold a few more Panameras than that wink. It is a VERY important car globally for Porsche. Albeit not as important as their top seller, the Cayenne.

This is a great thread, looking to buy tyres for the first time for a 996.2 GT3 and it's helping me understand the options! Car currently has PS2s and only just noticed the fronts are 5 years old, bit careless of me not to check so now need to go shopping

For the OEM wheels, I think my only Michelin options are PS2 or Cup2? I've seen some references to PS3 but don't think these are better than PS2 even if they are available in the right sizes?

For load / speed ratings I think I need to be 91Y at the front and 98Y XL at the rear?

If anyone could confirm that'll be helpful, then I just need to find somewhere that has the right ones in stock....

Cup 2 is a very good tyre for your car. Try tyreleader.co.uk for best price. Had mine fitted by 9e for nothing.

hehe

Well there's actually paying "nothing", and then there's paying £******* eekeekeekeek for a host of upgrades and then getting a set of tyres fitted for "nothing". I'd suggest the above falls in to the latter category ........

biggrin

It appears Toyo are about to change the R888 for a newer thread pattern... Thus I was able to pick a set of fronts for my GT3 for £260 delivered to my home 235/40/18 DOT 45th week of 2014. And contrary to popular belief R888s work even at 5C. Just got to be a bit more relaxed with the gas pedal... It was oponeo who supplied the tyres.

R888 were great on lightweight track cars on release circa 05/06.. never close to Cups dry lap performance wise & utterly useless on GT3's in hot summer track conditions, especially on the rear. Hope the new ones are a significant improvement. Let's not mention the price.

I have never used on the Porsche but I used them on my M3 and I found them to be as good as Cups but you had to keep on buggering about with the pressures to keep them working.

Agree... One of the fastest 996RSs that I have ever had the pleasure of arsing about with at the Ring - blue decals with a LUX number - also used to run 888s. We both found they hated heat cycles and were very sensitive to pressure/camber. On the subject of tyres - the Kumho V70A pisses all over anything else semi-slick, but in its infinite wisdom the company does not do the correct Porsche sizes. As to suggesting the R888s - at £260 for a pair, they had to be mentioned...

Yes, by a mile. One is a road tire - you tell me which one, the other is a slick with a thread. One comes in three different compounds, with some 18" sizes in soft specifically developed for the Germans who were crazy enough to rally GT3s as early as 2000, the other is just one size fits all great compromise. The only downside with Kumho - they like heat and camber, lots of both, which on track car that gets driven on the road sometimes does not work well...

what's with the riddles? smile

not talking road.. Cup 1/2's are the quickest tyre on track (hot dry summer conditions) bar slicks.. fact!

Usually you are correct, but here you are wrong - the Kumho is the quicker tyre as it is a race tyre, which God knows how has an E mark... The Cup is great, but ultimately is a road tyre...

Well... it might depend on the compound.

The cup 2 is a fair step on from the cup+, I'm not sure where Kumho are with dev of the V70a but I've not heard that much recently. For grip / longevity you won't beat the Michelin.

The new Toyo is called the R888R, I'm just waiting to get exact figures from toyo on improvements.

cheers
