I'm considering selling my 2.7 '03 986 and replacing it with a '01 996 cabriolet. Has anyone on here done this? Any feedback?
I'm also interested to know whether there will be more wind noise and buffeting in the 996.

Thank you.

Its pretty much the same car with a bit more power isn't it? Or is that too controversial?

You have a good looking cabriolet and you want to change to an ugly cabriolet? Hmm, your choice I suppose. Afraid I can't offer anything constructive other than, imo, a 911 should be a coupe. Always.

Don't know why there was so much hostility towards cab.

It looks very good in canvas top guise. Don't put the hardtop on as the whole package looks funny. I in fact never put the hardtop on, ever.

Don't ever put the hardtop on?

I've just bought this car (the missus wanted a convertible tiptronic so i appreciate it's hardly the 'classic' 911) and I think it looks ok...even with the GT3 kit. Yes, the lines aren't as neat as a tin-top obviously but it doesn't repulse me by any means!

The only negative reactions I get for my 996 cab are on this forum, in reality all I ever get from other motorists (apart from a couple of bean shakers) are compliments on it.

In fact in real life whilst I get compliments for the cab I hear nothing but unjustified negativity towards the boxster, even when I suggest it's considered a better drive and looker than the 996 cab but on this forum it's obviously the other way around.

It did used to annoy me what people said on forums but then I'd rather it this way around than the other as that would do completely my head in!

It looks as ugly as sin. Sorry, but it's just hideous with the hardtop on. Soft top looks okay mind, but much prefer the Boxster for open top motoring.

This. Of the two the Box is the better convertible. The 996 cab is far more blowy with the top down and just not quite as nice. I still really enjoyed mine, but the Box is definitely the better of the two for top down enjoyment.

Just gone from a Boxster S to a 996 cabriolet and in my opinion only the latter is far more preferable

I don't understand the negativity towards the cab at all - according to this site you should only buy a non sunroof coupe manual C2 and nothing else

Buy what you personally like sir

Can you explain why you prefer the 996?

Purely personal but the 996 feels more mature and I personally prefer the looks as less push me pull you plus the four wheel drive option appealed to me

Very much each to their own and I think it is said that the Boxster is 90% of the 911 for 60% of the cost but that extra 10% is worth it

Kind regards

I do actually care about driving dynamics however the car has been in the family since 98 and selling it isn't an option due to various factors. Furthermore I haven't driven a boxster or a coupe so I don't feel like I am missing out on something.

If however one test drove a coupe and picked a cab instead then I would fully agree with that sentiment but it is a bit of a sweeping statement smile

Anyway the way I see it, a cab is definitely more fun than a coupe when I'm only driving at 1/10 smile

No argument here as I mentioned it is a very personal choice certainly

One aspect in retrospect that might be a purchasing choice is that with the common reliability issues oft mentioned a factor in ones purchasing choice may be the market values of the cars in question. A cheaper Boxster may be easier to walk way from should a major engine issue arise but in counter, the 911 may be worth the repair costs long term.

Dare I say it but the 911 has a certain kudos as well but I appreciate this is a perspective issue again and very subjective
