My newish to me 6T is due a 80k/Major service.

Not wanting to get into a debate of merits of indie vs OPC though - My question is, what are the chances of me getting them down from their online fixed price (£750). I can potentially use any of the Scottish OPCs or Kendal...

Cheers

Why would you not use an independent?

What I do is ask what is included in the service and then pare the list to include just the essentials. Fluids, other consumables, but the foo foo stuff I scratch off the list.

In fact as the car gets older/more miles I just do something every oil/filter service. This time for the Turbo I had the plugs changed and the cabin air filter replaced. Next service I'll have the service manager look up to see if the tranny fluid is due, or the brakes are due for a flush/bleed, or whatever.

All I want is for them to stamp the book and tick the 'major' box. I think they won't do that for less than £750, their standard fixed price for a 6T Major. For that as I'm sure you know they do oil and filter, air and pollen filters, plugs and the inspection. Oh, and the washer fluid LOL. Price includes labour, parts and VAT.

I could/would do it all myself, oil filters and plugs is no biggy for most people and actually easier than old pork as the valves don't need setting. Much of this servicing malarky is simply maintaining resale value by having the book stamped of course.

So if an Indy is £300 and OPC would do it for £500, I would go for the OPC - to get the more convincing stamp, possibly an interesting courtesy car, and to enjoy the (largely now-evaporated) remnants of that special 'discerning' feeling that once came with being a Porsche owner.

I might get on the phone and try my luck anyway..does anyone know if the PCGB 10% off applies to OPC servicing?

Yes it does. Varies between OPCs - some will say 10% off parts only others will take 10% off the whole bill. Some dealers are giving bigger discounts for cars over a certain age. To get an accurate price to compare with call Reading Service dept and ask for a quote mentioning PCGB membership and the discount they give based on your car's age. I assume Scottish OPCs could get close to that figure unles you guys have gone independent...

Thanks - I have assumed the £750 was already discounted based on the car's age.

For instance its listed as a whopping £1250 for the same job on a 997 Turbo, which is going to be otherwise identical from a servicing point of view. eek Makes £750 sound cheap!

There's a difference between UK and USA car markets. UK owners/buyers are big on having a properly stamped book. USA owners not so much. I think dealers (OPC's) count on that some.

Here in the USA -- at least for me -- I just want the car's servicing up to date. While I do not have a stamped book I have a stack of service invoices and can show a prospective buyer the car is well maintained and well cared for, loved in fact. I can also point him to the dealer I used for most of the car's servicing.

You have to decide what's most important to you. If the stamp in the book means that much then it is the OPC for you.

2 years ago that 996 Turbo Fixed Price Major Service was £1250.
The price of £750 is already a discounted price. You can try for a discount, but I think you'll be hard pushed. If you try to knock off items on the list, the OPC will not give you a tick in the Major box - because they didn't do a Major Service! They did a compromised cut down major service and if they have any scrupples about them, they will not mark it as a Major Service. Someone wanting to buy you car assumes if an OPC ticks Major, that is what it had. Not a major minus this and that to get a bit of price reduction!

Where you may be able to negotiate ison the additional items they uncover - which on a car of this age is very likely. It is not unusual to pay a Fixed Price of £750 and end up with a final bill for double that due to additional work.

The additional work is at a discounted labour rate.

You can shop around at indy's, but my research is that like-for-like Major Service with spark plug change at an indy is not going to save you much over the OPC fixed prices - and as its important to you, you'll lose the OPC stamp in your service book.

Provide your own consumables if price is such as issue (providing they allow)

As a comparison, JZM charge £835 for a 48k service, they may include more items though.

£750 for a major service doesn't feel too rich to me, I just paid £400 a oil/filter/pollen/brake fluid change.

My 930 at my reasonable indie is around £650 for a major, so £750 for a big boy 996 seems fine

As above, supply your own oil and get it from Costco. That should save you a chunk off the total bill.
