Track days and/or continental touring. Once the speed is into 3 figures then even the smallest fleck of anything will go through paint, so whether you are following someone down the Hanger Straight at Silverstone or the A1 in Germany, chips are an inevitability. To the point that you really can't get precious about them - you either learn to live with them or have the car wrapped in transparent film. I guess the bottom line is that they are generally bought to be driven rather than polished, which is to my mind a good thing. wink
Agree with this. I could see mine getting chipped early during ownership and so went down the protection film route.

The 997.1 GT3 has no side sill protection at all and gravel rashes itself. I also noticed that the front appears to chip easily, rather like the wife's red alfa, so perhaps the paint is quite soft.

The paint protection film on mine was fitted really well and is doing a great job of protecting the paint.

Bought a new 997 back in the day. Paint was so thin on the wheels you could see the primer in some place and every drive added to the stone chip tally. Now drive a 964 turbo, no problem with chips and an every day Berlingo van or A8 if the missus is not in it and 30k mile on in both with no issues with body work or wheels. The A8 has 20 inchers that are as good as the day they were made. I think Porsche take the piss these days with paint and finish!!
