I'm close to buying a 996 Turbo off a mate, it's a 2001 in silver, black leather, manual with 110K on it with a fair bit of history, it's £20K and I reckon it's a sound investment....I've almost convinced him it's a good idea as he only paid £15.5K for it...watch this space
Sounds like an absolute minter and as you say a sound investment (it's already worth at least £4.5k more than he paid, if you are lucky enough to prise it out of his hands for that) but at such low mileage you could never actually drive it could you? A shame, but with the likely returns you'll achieve it's simply not worth it. As more and more owners hide similar away, a mere sight of one will become rare. And silver. Hens bloody teeth. Well done.Stinson said:

So....., why has the world gone mad for older cars, and this doesn't just affect the Porsche market, it also appears to filter through to all types of makes and models from Ford Capris, to all sorts of Porsches and Ferraris!
is it because :-
1. people are a little more flush with cash?
2. Nostalgia and people are wanting to re-live their youth?
3. Modern cars are so anodyne and soulless?
4. Everything now has an automatic gearbox that's great at first and soon dulls, recent videos from Chris Harris and Steve Suttcliffe both rave about Manual's again, and how they now really miss them?
5. Everything now has electric steering and falls in the same as 4.
6. People want to drive the car rather than the tail wagging the dog?
Or is it's all of the above?
And then the really rare cars are just out of control in terms of pricing!
Answers on a postcard please....

So is the Universe apparently but there is no sign of that deflating anytime soon,
Apart from that there are now more Billion and Millionaires than ever in the history of human kind where this kind of money for cars is often a night in a casino for some, dropping a couple of hundred grand on a rare desirable "classic" car is but a drop in the ocean.
And possession being 9/10ths of the law on rare cars will most likely keep prices high, if one rich person doesn't buy it then another probably will, especially with the new rich from the east.

1. Maybe but a couple of interest rate rises will bump up people's mortgage repayments and affect disposable income. That'll be the first small wake up call. When disposable income shrinks the toys go. And before anyone says "Oh no, the type of buyer buying these cars doesn't need finance or doesn't have a mortgage", bks there are lots of normal car owners jumping on the bandwagon in the hope of making a fortune. The title of this thread says it all. is it because :-

2. Possibly.
3. Perhaps but for every old skool fan there are 10 people who like to move with technology.
4. Again, perhaps but I know many who love these new instant gear change machines, including mates who've owned manual Ferraris and GT3s for years. One now swears by his 458 and the other is a PDK convert.
5. I think most would agree with that. No benefit to the real drivers.
6. See number 3.
It's a bubble and as soon as a few people get scared off common sense will prevail. I mean come on 964 C4s being listed at £30k. Mid '70s 2.7s and SCs at £25k. Slow rattly, chocolate engined crap.

Black or red? So I know which one not to back
A few people have clearly been reading too much into this thread with the cgt coming up a few times...

and per the picture it's not even really a C16 car with the US amber sidelights

What do the masses think the future value of a Singer might be? I have been giving serious consideration to rolling a few cars into a CGT, but, I think there is a massive usability issue which is probably by they are all stored at Porsche Reading. For example I am typing from the channel tunnel terminal on my way to Spa in a 996gt3 and the crappy roads and stop start traffic have if course been dispatche with ease. Not sure the same could be said had I been in a CGT.
So what about a Singer? Intended as the all rounder and super cool. Would it cost me a fortune? Eagle e types seem firm.

Cars won't drop in value.......it's industrial art form....... New interest from China, India, South America, Russia........
Goodwood, Silverstone, Pebble B, Padova, Esssen, Salon P, classic car tours.......endless activity.....
Specialists ( really good professionals ) lots of them.....
Major brands heritage, mainly Porsche, Ferrari but now in a very big way Jaguar...
Participative media ( like this ) almost like the Daily Mail for cars !
Massive fun...... links , watches, collectables, hobby, comeraderie , boys and girls tours, even TVRs now look good !
Rarity ! If it's not rare then yes it will eventually slide down but not totally.......a well looked after 3.2, SC etc is a great car and everyone needs to be encouraged especially getting younger people interested.... In future a Cayman R with zero factory options and six speed.....
ITS BRILLIANT ( sorry excited, but isn't that why we just love them, cars I mean ) Porsche just love them most !

Sorry can't add to your Singer question. So what about a Singer? Intended as the all rounder and super cool. Would it cost me a fortune? Eagle e types seem firm.
But ref 996 GT3 to Spa...I means that's why we love them. You can enjoy more of these cars' performance envelope by driving them there, enjoy on track, and drive home. I think they will go up simply because owners will not want to let go of them! Not much to replace with that does the same.
No point in a fast car that mostly sits in zone 1/2.
See you there on Monday if you are at same event!
