Having owned a 964RS Lightweight, I can say it is definitely not the best driving car ever!
On a damp or bumpy road the 964RS has trouble keeping up with a hot hatch and is not a pleasant experience to arrive dripping with nervous sweat.
This is so true. The car was totally slammed at launch by the motoring press. Its great on track, pants on all but the smoothest road.On a damp or bumpy road the 964RS has trouble keeping up with a hot hatch and is not a pleasant experience to arrive dripping with nervous sweat.
1. Pared back to the basics but with ABS
2. Small enough to thread through narrow country lanes
3. Handle like a go-kart
4. The oil leaks are all now resolved --- and were a long time ago
5. Classic shape
6. Good supply of spares with no need to code
7. Classic build quality
8. Most RS's really need new dampers, springs and bushes ...
9. Very tuneable --- add Motec and larger injectors and remove Cat for 325 BHP and 290 Ft Lbs ... plus.
996and Gen1 997's are not even on the scale by comparison (Other than the Mezger engines cars of course).
Why does anybody think that Singer start with 964's ???
Ask somebody who owns one.
Sadly not me, but I'm playing with the '73 911S and '75 2.7 Carrera equation ....
Can't have it all

I had two 964 C2s, both bought new.
Thoroughly enjoyed them and can see the appeal. But, I also had 3.2s and 993s and can also see why others might prefer these.
As with any of these models, finding a really good, original, unmolested, sensible mileage example is the tricky bit.

Maybe it is a case of certain people getting to a certain age and buying them?
I am in my late 30s so grew up with the impact bumper 911s and I found them them unforgivably ugly, and by the late 80s they were ancient cars (and with a naff image). The 964 was a breath of fresh air, modernised for what felt like the first time in a decade, and significantly better looking. The reviews of the day mentioned that the car had less 'compromised' handling than its predecessors.
People on here suggest that 964s were unloved, but in the 90s weren't there loads of impact bumper (IB) cars being converted to 964 looks? I had always assumed at least some of that was because they looked so much better than IB cars. Still, looks are obviously highly subjective.
Anyway, a sample of one :
When I got to car buying age my first preference for a 911 was a pre-IB car. In second place was the 964. The IB cars never had a look-in, and I found the 993 unappealing - same old glasshouse and ergonomics but with jelly-mould 90s styling around the lower half (and a lot more expensive than 964s).
Anyway, pre-IB cars went out of budget (my bearings being based on prices of the early 2000s ) so 964s were next in line. In early 2012 I would have bought a 964 C2 coupe if my old Alfa had sold quick enough, but that didn't work out. Having something more modern also had its appeal after living with a 35 year-old Alfa for several years. As it happens I decided I had to get a GT3 while I had the chance, but if I were still looking at air-cooled cars, a 964 C2 coupe is what I want (a 2.2 or 2.4 S having gone well out of reach).
Certainly, in London I have seen quite a few 964s in the past year, driven by people in their 30s/40s, compared to seeing virtually none in the 10 years before that.
Vive la différence!

So which order do you have them in Geneve? And why?
Good question. I've had 356 to 991, including 15 new 911s and 6 'classics', and had the opportunity to drive most models, many on road and track, but I'd struggle to put them in any logical order. However, personal highlights that spring to mind are:
- The 2.7 RSL - unquestionably worthy of the icon status
- The 3.2 Club Sport - one of the sweetest road going 911s I've ever driven
- The 993 C4 (Varioram)- nicest 993 IMO
- The 997 GT3 and RS - perfect road and track 911 with a lovely mechanical feel
Struggled to find long term affection for the 964RS, 996GT3 and RS, and most Turbos. But it's only my opinion, and we all have different tastes.
Absolutely!
I'd agree with the RSL and the Clubsport but my prerences are the reverse in fact with the RS models ahead of the other cooking versions. I prefer the feel of the 996RS over the 993 and 964 which I find a little wooden by comparison. Before anyone shouts foul, I own a 993 Clubsport so one might say that the compliment is praise indeed.
If - on the other hand - i had to drive a 911 as a daily driver and not a weekend/special occasion car, I think i'd be inclined to agree with your choices. I regret not picking up a nice cooking aircooled pre impact or 964 before they caught the shirt tails of the more rare models. There is something beautifully understated about them and they are quite a joy to drive. Far more enjoyable at lower speeds than current cars.

Lame, lame, lame!We can't end the thread there..its hard to capture exhaust sounds on youtube but this isn't bad for a static vid.

Piece of piss to get a 964 to sound like this
(Edit, he probably needs to tighten his clamps up a bit LOL)

When did you last see a 964 C2 manual advertised?
Ive been looking for about a year, they are quite rare to get hold of.
I bought one from Belfast.
It drove beautifully, and the five speed was sublime.
However it attracted all the wrong kind of attention, it being guards red n all.
The 993 sits better, although the 6 speed doesnt hacve the manly feel of the 5 speed box.
That aside, I'd hesitate before I got into another 964.
There are plenty of dogs out there.
Engine rebuilds and the like.
Rust, ooh, its everywhere.

I may have just bought one. C2 in guards red. Feckin gorgeous. Original panel car that was available for £40k six months ago at the hairpin co. Kicking myself for not buying it earlier but finally got my mits on it subject to Adrain Crawford being happy with it when he picks it up. Never dealt with Adrian but a very very easy guy to do business with. Liked him very much and haven't even met him (well I've seen his vids!).The yellow 993 turbo they have for sale at the mo is lovely too. £120k - I need to work harder!Ive been looking for about a year, they are quite rare to get hold of.

Adrian Crawford did have a low mileage C2 listed. If it's the one I enquired about it was considerably more than £40k and was already sold.

it was sold to me provisionally. he had not picked the car up at the time the ad went up. vendor backed out and sold to someone else. Disappointed as was looking for a C2 Coupe for ages. Who knows I may even get a better one!??. Ever the optimist
Have you had a look at the two at RPM and the two at ePorsch? Choice of colours... so long as it's Guards Red you're after. Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
