Window regulator broke on my 986 last week...horrible crunching noises and a stuck window. Just amazing the "difference in opinion" you get when it comes to fixing it.

I'm not an expert but I'm reasonably handy with a spanner. So I thought I'd have a go myself, perhaps with a good second hand genuine regulator.

So I phoned one indy/breaker, and although very helpful (and out of stock) didn't think there was any chance of me being able to do it without messing up the alignment and breaking various clips. A second dealer wanted big money for a second hand part that had just a months warranty...big money because they would only sell the regulator with the motor, because "nearly every single time you will f@@k it up and break it when removing the motor from the regulator". Ok...

Ironically it was my local indy, PCT in Coventry, who said there's no reason why I couldn't do it. And they were they guys who would have got the job if I'd bottled it. Only regret is that I had to buy the (new) part online as I couldn't get over to pick it up from them, however nice to get some decent advice and I remain a loyal customer!

So it's in, it works, it's aligned, no airbags went off and no clips broke. Gutting that the only "broken" thing is a £1 bicycle style piece of cable in a £100 part but that's life!

We all like a happy ending! I had to adjust a 986 door window regulator at one point (after an OPC bodyshop fitted a new door but handed the car back with a window set too far towards the rear with consequent epic wind noise from the a-pillar). It was less hassle for me to have a go myself at the weekend than take time off work to let them sort it but kudos to you for the repair which does sound fairly tricky.

P.S. There's another £1 part lurking inside the doors that can lead to £100+ bills and that's when one of the (two) microswitches in weach door lock assemblies pack-up (with the result that the windo does not drop when you pull the door handle). If you get this sypmptom, there's little alternative but to spring for a new complete door lock assembly...
