Well it's nearly that time and I've had an offer on my 911 from a specialist which is pretty good.

Going to be a Dad in March (very excited) and we both need a car for commuting and cannot have 3 cars.

We have a Mk5 GTI and I am choosing between:

2014 Macan / 2011 Cayenne or Panamera (I think the last 2 are too big)
2009 E63 saloon / 2011 C63 wagon in F1 pace car trim :-)
2007 RS4 B7 or 2013 B8 Avant
Any M5 from E39 + (although the Mrs doesn't like the E39...)

Current no.1 is a 2009 E63 at Bristol Mercedes for £30k and would hope I could get 22k in 3 years time.

All the above are 4 door, will be used for commuting but depending on the contract, may only be 2 miles to the station. Long distance road trips to Denmark and France every year very likely.

Appreciate any thoughts and one of the main objectives is good resale in 3 years so I can buy another 911.

Cheers

Its not clear why do you think you need to change the Golf? Its plenty big enough for another 9lb person, even if the mother insists it needs 100kg of survival kit.

I'm guessing you mean that the 911 is sufficient as we have a Golf?

If not, we currently have a golf and a 911.

Mrs would have the Golf for daily duties and I don't really want to turn up at work in a 911 or leave it at a train station :-(

Have you seen the size of a pram these days? I think my wife and I will need 3 cars for every journey, as a minimum.

First world bks; find a more compact pram.

It doesn't really bother me much, as I don't really enjoy cooking hatchbacks (including GTIs) anymore than I would an estate or even an SUV. It's all utility motoring, so the thing may as well be comfortable and spacious.

mrs envy manages to get a bugaboo chameleon into the boot of a mk6 golf no problem plus a week's shopping.

We've been away on holiday in the car and it was fine.

Also, it's just the first few months where new parents tend to bring the entire contents of mothercare with them just to pop out to the park, once mum & baby settle into a routine it becomes far easier to work out what you need and what you can leave at home. For instance we've got a Pacapod change bag that was bought before nap envy turned up, I think it was used a couple of times before being bunged in a cupboard.

OP, keep the 911 and buy a station car.

Have you considered buying roofbox?

I've even used my 964 with a roof box fitted for european trips before with my wife and baby!

Bought the wrong 911 for a family - 997 cabriolet so no roof box and rear seats tilt forward due the roof mechanism.

3rd car isn't an option also and currently driving 80 miles per day but that will change

A Golf is an ideal 2nd car for family. You can easily get all the baby kit including buggy in the boot.

If you're going to get another 911 in 3 years why not get it now.

If you need a station car get a banger.

I'd certainly suggest seeing how you get on with your Golf rather than changing because everyone else says you need a bigger car.

No space for a 3rd car and appreciate the Golf is big enough for my wife, but what do I use?

If I keep the 911 it won't get to stay in the garage overnight if it's my daily, it might get left at the station or it might be subjected to 80 miles per day.

All of which I'd probably still prefer to a saloon/estate/SUV but not ideal

Alfa 159 estate, Subaru Forester or Legacy Outback. Plenty of room and will be able to get the baby to hospital in the snow when the new baby coughs and the wife freaks out.

My own experience; distracted new mum+new baby = a car that will end up looking like a banger racer on the outside and a cross between her dressing table, and a skip on the inside. Keep the old Golf for family destruction duties, 'invest' in a nice 993, and walk to the station!

Hahaha

I've always liked the look of 993's but I've tried 2 and I wouldn't be that excited to drive it on the weekends, by myself, with no family

A 997 GT3 would get taken out at 5am before I start the day :-)

E63 will be great fun. Lots of space, pace and comfort, and when required, switch to Sport II and have fun.

Keep the Golf and the 911 and just go and buy a 2-3k st box for the commute and general st jobs.
Still work out cheaper than the losses getting a new car.

can't even see the previous version of the E63 for that. Dont think it will half in 3 years but then I don't have a crystal ball. £500 road tax and 20mpg isn't great. My 997 averaged 26.7 to Denmark
