Best drive this year?
Discussion
So many threads about values and service etc, how about one on the best drive you had this year?
Was it a continental trip across Europe?
A track day you always promised yourself or a 'best time' you beat?
or even popping out for a pint of milk that turned into an epic 2 hour drive?
Come on, there must be some stories you can tell that will give us all a break from the 'what stiching will hold the most value at resale time threads'
Over to you!

Spa 6 hour classic endurance a couple of weeks ago. First time I have raced a 1965 2 litre 911. First race that this car had competed in. Finished 29th overall from 110 starters. If we had not had a problem with the lights we would have finished top 16 and 3rd in class. But If's But's and Maybe's in motorsport don't count. Bloody magic though

Absolutely epic!!Wanted to start a topic but have just joined up and wasn't sure how to! I have been a long time lurker but having generally being based in the middle of the desert on the other side of the world for much of the past 3 years -mine construction in Australia- so there wasn't much much transport more exotic than Toyota 'utes', so couldn't offer much in the way of experience.
Anyways I have just returned from Germany where I tagged along to a conference with my better half, with the free hotels and meals it would have been rude not to. We flew into Stuttgart, stayed for a night then on to Heidelberg (Beautiful city and well worth a visit. Don't miss the castle). We visited and can highly recommend the Mercedes museum. The Porsche museum is just as impressive but on a smaller scale. I noticed that Porsche were doing a promotion - drive a Boxster GTS or Cayman S for 1 hour for 69€. Other models were available, some variant of the 991 was 99€, with longer term rentals also available.
Conveniently putting the 2500€ excess to the back of my mind, I chose the white PDK GTS and returned the next day -a sunny Sunday-at 9am for the drive. What followed was probably the best hour I've had. I slipped into the perfect seat. Had a quick rundown of the PCM and controls with the sales assistant and photo taken. Fired it up and drove gingerly to the nearby Domino Hotel to collect herself. Her complaints about not having a hair clip were quickly forgotten when I pulled up and dropped the roof. With the car properly warmed up we headed onto more suitable roads. Engaged Sports Plus and Sports exhaust. A couple of overtaking manoeuvres livened up the quiet Sunday morning roads. It was addictive listening to that exhaust note. We came off the dual carriageway onto B roads with rolling countryside - ideal Porsche territory. Btw it's interesting that they don't really fence off their fields. Being a bit of a luddite I'm not a huge fan of PDK but would live with it if there was no manual option. Manual mode was fine though. Steering feel was lovely, the brakes progressive and not as grabby as the rental econoboxes I'm used to driving atm. Carving through those corners was a joy. Flooring it in a couple of tunnels meant involuntary giggles and probably long term hearing difficulties. What a noise!! Closest I've come previously was in my old FD RX7 but this was on another level, especially with the roof down. With the hour quickly running out we made our way back to Zuffenhausen, stopping at a petrol station to make sure we returned it full. The best money I've ever spent, and unfortunately the only trip I've had in a Porsche this year.
There's too many things more important at the minute like buying a house and getting settled into a new career so I won't be running down to my nearest OPC waving my cheque book just yet. But at some stage in the next year or two I'll be looking out for a Hartech fettled 996 or a Cayman. I've well and truly caught thebug! With all the excitement I forgot to take pics while out on the road, but have included a few from the museum. Enjoy! I certainly did.

Two really stand out, both with my mate in his Cayman S and me in the 911 C4S Cab, and both starting at his place near the Welsh border and running through mid and north Wales. First trip was a longer, better route, but on the second trip I remembered a lot of the fun sections of road so could push a bit harder. Both days the weather was perfect for roof down driving, despite the later being in mid-September!
A couple of pics from where we stopped, the first at the Elan valley and the second on the Ffestiniog (if my memory serves me correctly) road. The roads were quiet, the weather perfect and the sound of the flat 6s going hard was fantastic. My mate in the Cayman also describes with amusement seeing me jump the 911 over a humpback bridge with it landing absolutely perfectly and not bottoming out - I'd love to say I did it on purpose!
