Cheapes place for TPMS sensors for 981?
Discussion
Looking at getting some winter wheels/tyres and most used wheels don't have TPMS sensors fitted..
I understand that an option is to run without and live with the error message for a few months or to buy a full set of TPMS sensors.
I read that they cost around £200 for a set of 4... Is that correct and from OPC?
I've also read that the batteries only last around 5 years... if that is the case, how much to replace those? I guess they have to be removed to get to them in the wheel itself?

Hi mate...I changed these on my 997 Turbo a little before I sold it. From what i recall, they were over £200 each not for a set of 4 from OPC. Also you are correct, battery life is around 5 years or so after which the sensor has to be changed you cannot simply put in a new battery. I got mine from a place called TPMS.com in the States.Even after tax and import duties they were a LOT cheaper than here in the UK. Go for the HUF/Beru ones they are the OEM ones Porsche use. This was for the 997 so imagine the 987 model for Boxster/Cayman was same so not 100% on the newer model but cant see they would of changed that much.
Wow.. that is expensive!!! I might just live with the error seeing it's only for a few months of the year when winters will be fitted!
Seen these here which are £61+VAT though

No idea I'm afraid - mine were for a 997, but I assume the system is the same across the range,Seen these here which are £61+VAT though

That seems ok but does not include the valve stem by the look of it (think that is the more expensive part)Seen these here which are £61+VAT though

I'm about to get new rears for my centre lock wheels and each time I think of going somewhere other than the OPC, the words "damaged rims" come to mind; the sensors are 5 years old so I'm thinking I should get new sensors at the same time; the less times the wheels have to come off the car and the tyres off the wheels the better.
Is 5 years the real life of the sensors, is it usage dependent?

I was told 6 years average lifespan. FWIW the ones on my 997 (daily driver) lasted around 7 years. Is 5 years the real life of the sensors, is it usage dependent?

It is usage dependent - as Sidicks points out mine actually went on for 7 years too - even tho the 111 point check from an OPC when I bought it stated 'TPMS need replacing' when the car was 3 years old.!!Is 5 years the real life of the sensors, is it usage dependent?

You can actually get a print out from the diagnostics that will tell you..they show some sort of measurement and operating temperature as I recall and one was showing a ridiculous reading indicating the battery had failed. The other three showed around 3 months left of battery life so I replaced all four.
I have just removed four TPMS sensors from a set of 997 wheels I have put on my 996.
The sensors are dated November 2011 with part number 997.606.021.01. They are orange and have a metal valve stem.
Are these worthless or would they be of use to a 997 owner? Can they be recoded to another car or is it just the valve stems which can be re-used? Do these fit all 997s or just 997.2?
Sorry for lots of questions but I would not want to dispose of them if they would be useful to a 997 owner (and help me recover some of the cost of the new wheels!)

Thought I'd give this thread an update as I decided to get some "budget" Titan TPMS sensors which cost me around £100 (for set of 4) on ebay from the US.
They are listed to work with Porsche Cayman 2013 and to be honest I wasn't sure if they were going to 100% work with my winter wheel/tyre set but I guess it was worth the risk at this low price! Anyhow, fitted the wheels last week, selected winter 19" wheel set on the menu... The system set to re-learn and it only took around 1 mile of driving before it picked up the new sensors and all works fine!
These are the ones I got -

Although it seems they have stopped listing them, I'm sure you can contact them if you want a set.
