Looking at getting some winter wheels/tyres and most used wheels don't have TPMS sensors fitted..

I understand that an option is to run without and live with the error message for a few months or to buy a full set of TPMS sensors.

I read that they cost around £200 for a set of 4... Is that correct and from OPC?

I've also read that the batteries only last around 5 years... if that is the case, how much to replace those? I guess they have to be removed to get to them in the wheel itself?

In addition.. are all Porsche TPMS sensors compatible with older models e.g. 987, 997 etc..

Hi mate...I changed these on my 997 Turbo a little before I sold it. From what i recall, they were over £200 each not for a set of 4 from OPC. Also you are correct, battery life is around 5 years or so after which the sensor has to be changed you cannot simply put in a new battery. I got mine from a place called TPMS.com in the States.Even after tax and import duties they were a LOT cheaper than here in the UK. Go for the HUF/Beru ones they are the OEM ones Porsche use. This was for the 997 so imagine the 987 model for Boxster/Cayman was same so not 100% on the newer model but cant see they would of changed that much.

Replaced mine last year and it is the battery and sensor you need to buy. OPC circa £700 for four, Tire Rack in the USA, £250 for OE Huf/Beru ones delivered including all taxes.

I think I was quoted around £750 'all in' from my local OPC and in the end managed to get it done at Exeter OPC for around £400-£450

Wow.. that is expensive!!! I might just live with the error seeing it's only for a few months of the year when winters will be fitted!

Seen these here which are £61+VAT though

No idea I'm afraid - mine were for a 997, but I assume the system is the same across the range,

That seems ok but does not include the valve stem by the look of it (think that is the more expensive part)

yes mate spot on...mine looked a tad different as they were a slightly older model (for 2007 997 turbo) but looks just the ticket. You can buy a lot cheaper sets on ebay etc but after reading a few posts on here from chaps that had fit them and had issues, I decided to pay up and get the OEM ones. I got a decent tyre supplier close to me to fit them rather than OPC..small thing it did take quite a while for the system to 'learn' the new sensors so be patient.

I'm about to get new rears for my centre lock wheels and each time I think of going somewhere other than the OPC, the words "damaged rims" come to mind; the sensors are 5 years old so I'm thinking I should get new sensors at the same time; the less times the wheels have to come off the car and the tyres off the wheels the better.

Is 5 years the real life of the sensors, is it usage dependent?

I was told 6 years average lifespan. FWIW the ones on my 997 (daily driver) lasted around 7 years.

It is usage dependent - as Sidicks points out mine actually went on for 7 years too - even tho the 111 point check from an OPC when I bought it stated 'TPMS need replacing' when the car was 3 years old.!!
You can actually get a print out from the diagnostics that will tell you..they show some sort of measurement and operating temperature as I recall and one was showing a ridiculous reading indicating the battery had failed. The other three showed around 3 months left of battery life so I replaced all four.

I have just removed four TPMS sensors from a set of 997 wheels I have put on my 996.
The sensors are dated November 2011 with part number 997.606.021.01. They are orange and have a metal valve stem.
Are these worthless or would they be of use to a 997 owner? Can they be recoded to another car or is it just the valve stems which can be re-used? Do these fit all 997s or just 997.2?
Sorry for lots of questions but I would not want to dispose of them if they would be useful to a 997 owner (and help me recover some of the cost of the new wheels!)

£700 for the set of TMPS sensors? Makes me wonder if it might be cheaper to get a set of wheels with tyres from your OPC. Prices from about £2000.

Thought I'd give this thread an update as I decided to get some "budget" Titan TPMS sensors which cost me around £100 (for set of 4) on ebay from the US.

They are listed to work with Porsche Cayman 2013 and to be honest I wasn't sure if they were going to 100% work with my winter wheel/tyre set but I guess it was worth the risk at this low price! Anyhow, fitted the wheels last week, selected winter 19" wheel set on the menu... The system set to re-learn and it only took around 1 mile of driving before it picked up the new sensors and all works fine!

These are the ones I got -

Although it seems they have stopped listing them, I'm sure you can contact them if you want a set.
