do people need gap ?

pick a better insurance company, and you get back current market value, which is more than invoice.

why have GAP ? it covers no extra's . NO loss from insurance miss fall, and only pays out in a write off.

better to put the money towards a higher end policy imo over very cheap Admiral type insurance.

I am not sure really what GAP can offer me on a GT4 !

"most comprehensive car insurance policies offer 'new car replacement' during the first 12 months of ownership any way"
"insurers will cover the current market value of your car , after the 1st year" current market value will be more than invoice :-)

so WHY HAV GAP it's only for "depreciating" values if you want an invoice pay out in a write off 3 years later !!!

give it 3 years and you lot will all be claiming "miss sold GAP" lol

Purpose of GAP is to avoid purchasing a tracker.
If the insurance company require one for a car worth more than 75k. Agree a value of 75k and fill the gap between that and invoice with an insurance policy - return to invoice or GAP. There may be holes in the argument but it is one idea.
In addition I would not want a stolen car back.

I've had a lotus and lead ballon for 1st year or two after that very stable. In general GT cars are other sort of balloon and go up not down based on past performance.

So as others have said a proper insurance policy much better than a standard policy and GAP for this type or car.
Whilst I agree re: gap insurance your theory on pricing is flawed.

You have a very short memory and/or you are looking at a very small sample size of the pricing history of GT cars. Just because the prices over the last couple of years have risen does not mean it has always been thus.

If you are planning on your GT4 being an appreciating asset for anything more than a few months I think you may be mistaken.

Wouldn't buy any car of that value without taking out GAP insurance, just in case the insurance company dig their heals in as they so often do. For the sake of £200 on top of a £70k purchase, I can't believe it is being debated. Just get a quote from ala.co.uk, they've always been competitive and decent to deal with.

You say in jest but ive had a salesman (Hatfield) say that in the future, this will be th eonly way to get into a GT and thats to put a LOI in now. Whether thats truthful or not i dont know but recent history would suggest so.

Ive got mine in for the next version, whether this is the next gen or the RS i dont know just the next one, of which ill only be interested in if it has PDK

Also most now seem to have yearly subs with no lifetime option available.
Global Telemetrics (company) offer lifetime one off subs but then hit you with a 3 year renewable warrenty that you do/dont have to take out

I still would like to know what it's going to offer you on a GT4

I have had 50+ cars to date and never had GAP so £25k better off atm

cars are insured market value and for the 1st 12 months back to invoice. (I doubt I'll keep it over 12 months)

I guess people take out gap like they did PPI and all the other stuff people seem to go for these days, Is it a fear factor ?

As I said it's for financed cars which drop like a stone imo.

GAP ONLY pays out on own fault write offs, that's is back to invoice. seems pointless to me on a car which will be £15k overs

write off's work in a way where they look at the 3 cheapest cars for sale and quote you, you look a the 3 most expensive cars for sale and quote them and you meet in between.

Not that I ever had to claim for a total write off, but I would take market value over return to invoice.

I have talked to my insurance many times about agree value and small print, and they pay out current market value at the time of the claim.

Not going into it to make money. Just nice to have assurance it is extremely unlikely to loose 50% of its value over 2-3 years.

Fine, but you are basing all your decisions to avoid GAP insurance on the expectation that the GT4 will be worth more than invoice value. I can't see you having owned 50 cars where they have all appreciated in value...plus you acknowledge never having written a car off!

For any car that drops like a stone in value once driven off the forecourt, I'd rather pay £150-200 safe in the knowledge that should the worst happen 2 or 3 years down the line that I'll get back what I paid in full, not what the insurance company deem is market value. Granted it would be all I'd be entitled to in order to buy like for like, but certainly nicer to have the full amount again and potentially buy something better.

It's not £150 to £200 though on high value cars more like £300 min to £800 OPC price.

Any way I don't take out insurance on any thing, just the way I roll. (unless legal needs)

how many people burn a car after 3 years to get return to invoice ? bet it happens, it's a stupid insurance imho.

If my cars worth 10k less than I paid for it 2 years later than I am happy with market value.

I bet you have protected no claims also :-), life, PPI, mortgage, OPC warranty etc etc.

Possibly the first case of "I expected a 3.8L GTS and all I got was a stiff track toy with terrible ground clearance", with many more to come. wink

Nope, not one that gets suckered in to these things, but do feel that GAP insurance represents good value for money should the worse happen. I appreciate it is a balance of risk versus reward, but for £200, to potentially recover £10k (in your example), as a one-off payment covering 3 years, I'd say that is worth it.

Pray tell, you don't protect your no claims? As for the rest, life, ppi, mortgage, nah, I don't have loans (no ppi), I don't have a mortgage, and I don't have a life biggrin
